Price: $42.48/box... nope.
Why when you can reload cheaper than that, even with the V-Max bullets.. And these are steel case to boot. At least if they went brass you could reload them. At that price for what they're offering you're much better off pulling surp bullets and sitting your bullet of choice on top. I make most of my hunting rounds off pulled milsurp. Not going to waste brass in the bush.
At least they're in boxes of 50 though and not 20's... Still far short of a deal when you take into account what they're offering. we live in the land of cheap Czech Milsurp ammo.. Down south, they'd give a nut to pay what we do, and Hornady is pricing against that, not ours.
.edit-
I'm seeing it as cheap as $25/50 down south.. At that price it's getting a little better, at least it's matching home loads.
Maybe not when compared to reloads or milsurp but for someone that doesn't reload and wants to hunt with off the shelf loads its comparable even with steel casings. Hornady .308 150gr. SST cost $32 for 20 rounds at Cabelas. Hornady Leveraction .30-30 is $23 for 20 rounds. Even Remington Core Lokt is $18 and up for 20 rounds.
For someone that shoots milsurp with a SKS and wants to try hunting with it without investing in reloading equipment or doesn't have the time for reloading - this seems like a good compromise.
... for the price of the other commercial x39 loads you could sell your brass to freaks like me and make a lot of that price up.
If it comes to Canada for some of the prices that it's floating around for down south (fat chance), I'd buy some as well.. but you know we're going to get bent over right?
you might want take some time and do a search on that bullet.
what i have read from US hunters doesn't really sound like the
V [varmint] MAX is a very good deer bullet. you would be way better off with
prvi i think.

How about Federal soft points?
Uses brass cases and about $17 per 20 round box.
What are the prices on these other commercial x39 you're talking about and where are they? I just did a quick check of Cabela's and Wholesale Sports and neither lists any cheap brass hunting ammo in 7.62x39mm. Sure there is Prvi Partizan but if its not for sale locally then add shipping costs to that price. Both Cabela's and Wholesale sell Hornady ammo.
A brother of a friend of mine hunts Norhtern Ontario with his 858. From what I hear even though he reloads the issue is bullets not brass. I shoot milsurp on the range but its illegal to hunt with it. This offering from Hornady is just the ticket to go hunting with a 858 or a SKS without investing in relaoding equipment.
You may have to actually look around.. Cabelas and Wholesale aren't even on the list of places I'd be looking for ammo.
There's lots of commercial x39 out there. I have cases of;
- Sellier & Bellot
- Prvi Partisan
- Remington UMC FMJ
- Remington Express Rifle SP
- Winchester Super X
- Federal Power Shok
- Federal American Eagle
- Cor-Bon DPX Hunter
..All from Canada. You may have to walk in to stores, go to auctions, gun shows, talk to people.. but it's out there. There were a few x39 bolt guns that were quite popular in the 70's, especially in Ontario, and ammunition comes up if you know who to ask. The kicker is that on average I have paid the same or less for my non-corrosive brass cased ammo than surplus because of the places that I got it. when you find some out of the way shop that's been sitting on a few cases for a couple decades they think you're doing them a favor when you tell them that you'll "take it all".
But if you rely on the box-stores for your supplies, you'll never get a deal, or likely even find what you're looking for. It's the little gems that'll set you up.
There are lots of .310 bullets out there to be had. I've never had a problem getting them. My personal favorite is the Hornady 123gr Spire Point. Coyotes, Deer.. all love them. x39 isn't a very stellar performing round in terms of ballistics and is therefore pretty forgiving in reloading. It's a great short range deer-banger.
Well its a mute point: I don't hunt with my 858 as its the restricted 858-4V folder. But I do hunt with 110gn .243 Win and 130gn .270 WSM both with Nosler Partitions. But I think a 123 gn 7.62x39mm at close range (50 to 100 yds) in a SKS would do the trick although I can't say for sure as I've never used a V Max bullet.
It may be a varmint bullet in smaller calibres with a larger case size but at 300 yds the Hornady x39mm V Max drops 15 inches so I doubt its going to be used for long range varmint shooting. Maybe someone will give it a try on deer at close range and post their results.
umm, how is your 858 restricted? folder is fine. Your 858 is only restricted if it has the original barrel length on, then it would be a 58 not an 858.
I have the same gun check your reg cert
