Any ideas why my trail cam crapped out?

So 2 weeks ago I put my trail cam up, its a moultrie i40.
New camera, first time being used, new batteries, new memory card. Pictures were highest resulution, with a 3 shot burst.

Today I get to my camera and it wasn't on.
Opened it up, switch was on, after some checking found that the batteries had died. Don't really care about that, SD card is probably full of pictures.

Nope, 2 pictures, 1 taken of me just before I put it up, and the second was a minute later.

Any ideas what would drain out my battery so much, considering NOTHING was taken after I left?

what temp was it at night and what quality of batteries, mine are good for only two weeks

Wow!

I have a Bushnell trophy cam and put Energizer Lithium batteries in it last October. With well over 2500 pictures taken on the highest setting(5 Mpx), the batteries are still at half or more(just checked yesterday).

Two weeks for batteries is crazy :runaway:

My first cam was an I40 and it would take at least 800 pic's on a set of batteries, so you definitely have a problem. The lcd screen on mine is fooked now, so it looks like it will be going in the garbage. If you just bought it, bring it back and get the Bushnell Trophy. Same price, a third the size, lasts months on a set of batteries, and has much more settings. The only thing the I-40 does better compared to my Trophy is night shots, the IR flash is a bit stronger on the I40.

i'm gonna hazard a guess it was probably bad batteries. Process of elimination, go but some batteries and leave it over night to photo you dog...hampster, whatever.

LITHIUM BATTERIES are the ticket. They last forever and can take the temperature swings

I use Duracell's or Energizers in my Moultrie I50, and they last a LONG time.

Had to replace them (2008-09 season) when they were at 30%, after 3000+ pics, 4+months, and temps as low as -25C.

Must be a hardware and/or software issue...I'd return it if possible, otherwise contact Moultrie.

Freshness of batteries and night temperatures are probably the two biggest concerns. If it goes below or near zero at night paying the extra for lithium is money well spent. If you aren't getting hundreds to a thousand pics per set of batteries you might want to rethink what you are using. This is based on using a dozen or more kinds of trail cams over the last 20 years.

So my cam was up for 1 week, and I returned to dead batteries.... AGAIN!
Atleast this time there were some nice pictures.

I called up my huntting shop where I bought it, they're going to get in touch with moultrie for me, and get them to pay the difference on a replacement.

And that is yet another reason why it's always nice to deal with your local hunt shop, vs a big box store.

Use batteries only rated for digital electonics/camera use. The fineprint, especially on those clone battery packages, is extremely fine these days. I've got fooled a few times with them in the process of trying to save a buck or two.
