What do you need to install a set of new sights on my glock 4th gen. Either adjustable or non adjustable. Is it possible to do this myself or should I let a smith do it?

It is totally possible to do it yourself.

Time and patience, as well as a soft touch will prevail!

I, however, took mine to TSE, paid $20, waited an hour and walked out with my new sights and no marring or deformation on my gun.

Well worth it. He test fired and adjusted it before he gave it back, then re-adjusted for me when I needed the rear sight pushed a mil or so.

Ymmv

Well I screwed it up royally. ruined a set of trijon sights. I used a flat head and a hammer and the flat head slid off and took a huge chunk out of the rear site. and the rear is a hair away from being on and now I cant get it off now matter how hard I try.

Can anyone suggest how to get it off so when I go to the smith on tues he dosnt have to charge me to take the rear off?

God its not my day.

A bigger hammer... a sharper punch... it is already screwed up... :D

Seriously - why screw it up more... what have you got against a smith making a living? It really should not cost that much to have it removed...

Your experience should be a wake-up call for all those who are desperate to save 20 bucks.
Let us know how much you'll spend when the dust settles.

I think his "soft touch" got him into this predicament.

:D Don't you know you're not supposed to beat on the back of a screwdriver as a chisel?

Sometimes it is better to buy the sights from the gunsmith even if it cost $5.00 more. A lot of us will install them for free if you buy them from us in the first place. It is a 5 minute job on a GLOCK.

Come on, give the guy a break. Probably has nothing to do with the cost of getting it installed. Who hasn't been in this situation? You know, the parts arrived in the mail today, picked them up after work, now its late at night, you want to have them on as soon as possible but know you won't have time to take your gun to a gunsmith, ATT and all... Plus, it dosn't look that difficult. So you give it a shot...

I hope it turns out well for you.

Wow there I guess there are a lot of guns smiths clamouring at the thought of making 20 bucks eh? well as usual, lately on this website someone asks for assistance on this forum and all you get is a bunch of whiney people who feel the need to trash talk someone instead of offering helpful advice.

If you must know, the only competent gun smith locally who said didnt say he would need my gun for a month is just a little over an hour away, and quoted me 2 hours for install @ 60 dollars(the same as other smiths), and for those of you who's math is not up to snuff that is 120 dollars in labour alone, plus my time to drive out there, and the gas that goes along with driving a lifted truck in downtown traffic plus waiting around for 2 hours.... I would have love to bought sights from the smith but he only had cheapo fiber optic sights left which I didnt want and any sight he had ordered is on back order, so he sent me to daves surplus... and to top it all off he said give it a try yourself, it isnt that hard and a small flathead is better then a punch... but I am sure all you knew that.

So all in all the elitist so called "gunsmiths" on here who felt the need to jump in when the thread went from me asking how to install, to me failing to install. Thank you for your useless information I will be sure to file it in the "I could care less file of my life" and may you go trolling on this forum in peace and tranquility. As we watch this website being turned from a helpful tool to a gun nut. To a tool for inflating people egos and make them feel better about themselves.

Sorry about your sights, I have always found kroil to be a good penetrating oil to free things up for drifting. Princess auto sells some decent brass punches that are good for this job, occasionally they go on sale. It is a good place to get a rubber mallet to avoid what happened to you happening again.

Canadian Tire sells some vices that are good enough, check for one that you can replace the part of the Jaws with wood or rubber to prevent marring what you are gripping.

I realize all of this might cost more than the gunsmith but you will be left with tools that can be reused. Start with the kroil, mallet and punches.

Bad time of the month?

You said, "Well I screwed it up royally. ruined a set of trijon sights. If "the rear is a hair away from being on" and it is already heavily damaged hit it harder with a heavier hammer but make sure you hold and hit the punch square with the sight body.

If you have not been holding the slide firmly in a padded vise - that is what went wrong.

If the 'smith' quoted you 2 hours to install, what did he quote to remove it?

I am not clamoring at the thought of making 20 bucks... I stopped working on restricted guns a few years ago.

Seriously - why screw it up more... what have you got against a smith making a living? It really should not cost that much to have it removed...

Yea, I must have read your post wrong:rolleyes:

So which is it? use a hammer, or let a smith take care of it?

And thank you for stating the obvious yes it is a bad time of the month. The previous story I have posted would have probably given that away, unless you are implying that I am menstruating. In that case no I am a male...

Whining doesn't get you anywhere.. I don't want to do the I told you so crap but since you didn't want to listen to advice before why will you now..

Really you need a press for the rear:
ww.topglock.com/item/42972_MGW_Tools_MGW_SIGHT_INSTALLATION_TO.aspx

Or something similiar, and a screwdriver for the front.

a lot of this has been stated:
good padded vice
hit it straight
use a soft punch, and mallet (brass or plastic)

sorry about your luck

I did mine with a Nylon punch and a hammer.....I also did the front sight....took me longer to mill down a Nut Driver to fit in where the front sight nut went in.....all in all, I think I spent 10 minutes....Front and Rear, and modified a tool to work........I am not a smith, just fairly handy with tools!
