Self Defense Pump

I've never bought a gun strictly for self defense but, after a recent encounter with a bear in camp while fishing, I've decided it might be a good idea. I have quite a few rifles and shotguns but this one will be my only dedicated defense gun. Others are all wood stocked custom or semi custom rifles and double shotguns.
I want a 12g , pump, short barrel that will be reliable nearly 100% of the time. Will use it mostly in camp for bear defense but would like it for home defense too.
Synthetic is OK but not required. Price up to $1000 or so although I'm thinking it will likely not be required to spend this much? Ideas?

Get one of the synthetic Browning BPS pumps. Most solid pump made IMHO and well under $400 right now in a few places. Much smoother and more reliable than any other pump gun I've ever used.

Yeah Regardless of what Canadians think, you can still defend yourself in your home, with firearms included.

Equal force may be used to defend yourself in your own home.

Short shotgun with lower pentration shot would likely be best.

Dump out the lead and fill it full of Jalapeño and other pepper seeds :b
*ouch*!

Do you live in the US?

No, Canada all my life and, trust me, if I had a home invasion and felt myself of family were threatened, I would not hesitate to use a gun in defense.

I like the BPS idea as I did use one a couple decades ago and found it a well made gun. I didn't know they made a defense model though.

Thanks for the replies, new to the site and really appreciate it. I'll be checking each suggestion.

If by lower penetration you mean smaller size shot that would be my choice. I use 7 1/2 shot for pruning large poplar branches that are too high for my ladder. Not a bit short on penetration.:D

my opinion 870 wth proper sights and some slugs that it likes

The brand of SG is less important than good sights. My personal favorite is a fat blade front sight an a ghost ring on the rear. For bear in a shot gun don't mess with anything but slugs. You don't have to go to three inch, 2.75 is quite enough. You can get a mossberg 3 barrel set for less than six hundred. use the deer (rifled slug barrel). try as many different slugs as you can from cheap to spendy and find out what your gun likes. Oh and forget everything you have ever seen on a screen about shotguns. Aim it with the sights like a rifle squeeze and then rack that pump. Sights that glow in the dark are a bonus. SNICK SNICK BOOM!!!!!. happy shooting. Oh yeah don't buy anything without proper sights, a front bead is not a proper sight.
