I live in SW Ontario and I want to try grouse hunting for my first time so I would like to know where I can shoot some grouse without going too far. So if anyone could help me out that would be awesome.

For Southern Ontario, you are SOL. The closest for you is probably North Bay or Northern Tip of Ottawa Valley (Mattawa).

Ive been up few times to top of the bear bait and just wonder around, usually Ill see couple of birds by this time of year but so far I havent seen any, it can be different around your place (I hunt about 15km away from 12mile bay)

going without a dog is a challenge in itself but fun too, just not as succesfull as doing it with a dedicated bird dog

If your in Princeton area find the nearest bush with dense cover and move though it quietly with your eyes open and look hard. Theres plenty of Grouse in southern Ontario you just have to look for them.

I get a few outta waitamintue thorns while bunny hunting my beagles put em. Shoot quick there like rockets down here. Look for dogwoods ninebark n thick cover

Yup, In between North Bay and Temagami you'll be tripping over Bush Chickens.

can you post a map of some crown land newbies can access, maybe some resource roads etc?

will go out for my first ontario hunt soon i hope (pending test pass etc), dont mind going alone but like to be safe and legal about where i go....

the guy from alberta is the expert on ontario eh?
you can hunt them in simco, grey bruce, parry sound, huntsville, severn gravenhurst to name a few although you would be better off up in sudbury
cheers

All along the north shore of Lake Erie, need dog and landowner permission. Check out MNR website or contact local district office and they can direct you to crown land. Populations are small and fragmented, I only went out once last year near Delhi/Simcoe and put out two birds at 35 yrds, by the time I swung up on them they were 45 yrds, so needless to say I saved the ammo.
