GSG Vs. Chiappa 1911-22 .22LR

There was a recent post asking for opinions on the GSG 1911-22 and the overall opinion was good. Based on the comments there, I wouldn't be worried about buying one. I'm wondering about the Chiappa version.

Does anyone know anything about, or have an opinion on the Chiappa 1911-22 vs. the GSG ? Both seem to be similarly priced and available. Is one any better than the other?

I've handled both, but shot neither. Based purely on handling characteristics, esthetics and visible build quality the GSG is very much better than the Chiappa in every regard. My local gunshop has sold a ton of the GSG's and had zero complaints, except that stripping them requires a scrwdriver. Accuracy is described as excellent by the folks I've talked to who have the GSG - I don't know anyone who has fired a Chiappa - which is interesting in itself.
 
I think Chiappa means "frustrating as hell" in Italian:D:D. Kidding. They are extremely finicky as to what you feed them as they seem to only like round nose bullets. The GSG eats just about anything. The difference between them appearance wise is very minimal however the GSG wins hands down on functionality/performance. Chiappa has an integrated or non removable barrel whereas the GSG is almost the same takedown wise as a true 1911 with the exception of the small machine screw thats needs to be removed first.

I've handled them both.

I bought the GSG 1911..... Shot it for the first time last Wed...... very pleased with it so far.

Any particular reason you chose GSG?

I'm interested in one or the other, but there are two dealers fairly close that sell the Chiappa. If they're the same then I'll deal with them. Unless someone can direct me to a GSG dealer "close" to Ottawa?
 
Target Sports has a Chiappa for a club gun but I haven't shot it.

I have had the GSG for the past month or so, putting about 1,500 rounds through it. After fiddling with sight adjustment I almost love it. It feels and handles a lot like a real 1911.

One of the Target Sports guys shot my pistol this past Sunday and was very, very impressed - as I was with his accuracy and trigger control that were better than mine. He then showed it to other guys working there and they were all impressed. They all shot the Chiappa club gun, and for them the choice was GSG hands down.

Now THERE'S a compelling argument ! Between this and NAA's comments, I think I'll go with the GSG. Sort of too bad becuase some supporting dealers I have already done a little business with carry the Chiappa. Maybe time to spread the wealth a little .
 
I bought the GSG-1911 and in the first weekend put 1200 rounds through it. I absolutely love it and sometimes take it out just to clean it again cause it's so fun... I've only put about 300 more shots through the gun since then but hope to get out as much as I can before winter comes.

The first 1200 rounds had a lot of jams, like at the beginning every second shot. I learned out to take it apart, clean it really well, and the it did better the second time out. Last time out I shot 300 shots with no failures. I think it had to do with me cleaning it properly, and with the type of ammo.

My only complaint is that the slide release doesn't always catch the slide when the mag is empty. The slide rests on the mag, so you can't eject it without pulling the slide back and manually pressing the slide release up. I'm still new to 1911's so it is very possible it's just something I haven't done correctly yet.

All in all, I would recommend it 100%, best gun purchase I have made.

(Oh, and I have no experience with the Chiappa)
 
I guess I put the recoil spring, in backwards on my GSG, it jammed up fiercely, had to drive the spent shell out with a cleaning rod, then the full length guide rod was sticking out the front of the spring cover (not sure the real name, you know what I mean). I had to use a mallet and punch to get the guide rod out, then figure out what the problem was. Of course I had forgotten my allen key at home, so I couldn't ask the guy at the range, or take it apart with him. Other than that little thing, which I'm sure was due to my improper assembly (the manual isn't the greatest help either), I love mine. Put the tallest front sight on, and it's at least as accurate as I am, probably a little bit more.

i just got my gsg today and noticed the same thing, seems like the mag is not pushing up the slide release hard enough to catch the slide. its kinda annoying having to push the slide release up or pulling the slide back to drop the empty mag. this is my first 1911 so i don't know if they are all suppost to be like this...other than that the gun feels very solid.

i did some research on the 1911 forums and it seems like this problem is common with this pistol and gsg has already sent replacement parts for their US customers check out this thread. They got replacement steel mag follower, slide release, and barrel bushings to replace the pot steel ones that doesnt work properly. check out the last pic in the thread, its exactly like mine where the slide release doesnt move up to lock the slide.

anyone tried to see if a .45 slide and mag will fit? ive read that the mag doesnt fit because of the mag safety but its very easy to take out. i took mine out seeing as this gun has 3 other safeties.

We spoke with the manufacture about this and we were told this is the way it is designed. If you insert a loaded mag it will chamber a round when you release the slide. We also provide a 1 year manufactures warranty for the GSG 1911 and if anything goes wrong we will fix or replace it free of charge.

I went out and shot another 500 in mine today... great fun! (Despite the bad political news today...)

Neotekz: I looked at that link, that is what happens to mine.

Blueline: I agree the gun is designed to chamber a round when the slide lock is pressed, releasing the slide on a fully charged magazine....

The problem is the last shot. When you shoot the last shot, what should happen (and usually does) is the slide lock catches the slide, locking it open. What happens sometimes, and this is something that should not happen, is the slide is caught only on the mag follower. So the mag is empty in the gun, with the slide locked on the follower. You can't eject the mag, because the friction of the slide against the follower. If you pull the slide back the fraction of an inch and engage the slide lock, then the mag will drop clear.

It happens with mine intermittantly.

Still really happy with the gun though, FUN!

you could load a mini mag for the last round of every mag, and bulk for the other 9 rounds - that should increase the frequency at which it locks the slide correctly :cool:

Scott i think you misunderstood me, here a pic to show you what i mean, i don;t think it was designed to do this. looks so wrong lol when the mag is empty the slide catches ONLY the mag follower and not the slide stop. so in that pic the mag is empty after teh last shot and now slide is pressed on the mag follower and will not drop the mag. to drop the mag you have to either manually engage the slide stop or pull the slide back while pressing teh mag release. its not a huge problem just annoying and have read that US distributer ATI has sent out replacement parts to solve the problem

I like my GSG, I can't compare it to any other .22 as this is the only one I have shot, but I have not had any troubles.
Mine likes the hottest rounds I can feed it, only had 4 jams, and had the slide not lock twice, all within the first 50 rounds, was perfect the next 700 rounds. All on the factory lube. Haven't gotten it out again yet.
