Can anyone pass along any advice? I'm looking for a range/target rifle and rather slim potential for hunting. Quite a few folks (both gun guys and not) have recommended the Savage 10FP in .308. I like the heavy barrel and the basic looks, but one store in Calgary (will not name) questioned the quality of the Savage vs. Remington. Any thoughts I would really appreciate it!

Agreed - Remington's quality control is not what ity once was, and I have yet to try many rifles at twice the price of a Savage or more that are as accurate out of the box.

I have a Savage model 14 in 270 wsm and a left hand .22. Excellent all around and I wouldn't hesitate a recommendation. Very accurate, and great quality at a good price. I don't have much experience with Remington so I can't comment there

My Savages/Stevens will out shoot the majority of my Remingtons. I haven't had too many probs with my Rems other than an SPS that would spontaniously rust. I have no, repeat, no problems with my Savages/Stevens. I have Ruger 77 MkII that has ocasional feeding issues and Weatherby Vanguard which really is a dark horse (fussy about it's brass but shoots straight and is well built)

Im more of a hunter then a target shooter but lasy year my friends remington had the firing pin freeze in -15 and my savage functioned flawlessly the same day, and it will also group very well when i am puttin it on the paper, i would say savage is better in quality and accuracy.

Try one of the new Savage accu-stocks ,a friend just got one in .338 and it easily cut 1/2 MOA. over and over again................Harold

Just make sure you handle the Savage first before you buy it. I would'nt buy a new one over the internet. I was going to buy a 116 a few weeks ago, but it was'nt seated properly into the accustock, and it was'nt free floating. I ended up spending the extra money and I bought a Tikka. It kind of peeved me a bit, since I went over budget. I am sure Savage is a great rifle, but there are some out there that snuck by quality control. Although, I am sure the same is true about Remington.

I just picked up my first rifle last weekend. A Savage 16 FCSS in 243. I haven't put many shells thru it yet and being that its my first "real" gun (I had .22s as a kid) I couldn't really tell ya that it's better or worse than anything. I bought it over a Remington 'cause of all the bad things I've heard about them on hear. For what it's worth, I put a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 with DOA 600 reticle on it.

I own a many savages and a few really nice remingtons....my opinion would be go savage IF your goal is to have it shooting VERY well straight out of the box. If your goal is to mess with it - go remington - because you'll need to get some 'smithing done likely.

Messing with a savage is so straightforward also - I'm saving up for another one now - I think a 10fp in 308, take that barrel off (simple operation with an easy to find barrel nut wrench) and install a 260rem AI shilen match select from Mysticplayer....mmmmmmmm Shilen on a savage.....own one already.....my kids claimed it - I'm tired of them outshooting me (and my prized bazillion dollar remington) with it.

Savage yes

Have had a SAVAGE 111FCXP (Not accutrigger) in .300Win Mag. For about 3 years Good accurate gun. I did install a LEO. VX scope, rings and basis(which cost more than the rifle) Reload,. good accurate rifle and one of my rimfires wears the simmons scope that came with it.
