Is it wrong?

Geez doc, just buy a used stock and put one on your rifle. Pretty much likely it will fit pretty close. Western Gun Parts sells used stocks for Marlin so I expect they have used for Winnies too. Or do like I did and put a wanted ad in the EE. Should be close enough. Then once you know it fits then sell the other stock. You could net zero. Have done just that a couple of times.
 
I wouldn't get anything but a plane old pre-64 winchester in 30-30 myself. Call me a fudd but if I ain't willing to let my guns get beat up a bit when hunting, then i shouldn't be buying them. The only commemerative i'd buy is the CPR (canadian pacific railroad) edition and the only reason i'd buy one is because of my GF. Her dad died when she was 10ish and thats the company he worked for so i'd buy one for her. I know she'd love it. The only ones i've seen were 800-1000$ish though. Don't get wrong, i love my GF but that's a lot of cash. One day, i'll get one for her though.

Well if it's only $800.00 then it's not that "collectible". I find it hilarious how some go all "bonky" with guns and their "collectibleness" when a good set of winter tires on rims cost more!

Winchesters are a dime a dozen and had been produced in so many different versions it makes your head hurt trying to list them all. There's a "special model" for every event (and non-event) in history. The only thing for sure is that they are great rifles and are a pure pleasure to shoot and carry. Go and have fun with them if you so desire.

I'm thinking 'huh', I bet this is exactly the same converstion that took place about 50yrs ago when someone was thinking about buying a NIB Arsenal re-furb enfield/garand just to sporterize it.......

I say it's your money, do what you like...... I didn't shoot mine, I sold it. I got a used '94 30-30 & $450 for my Alberta Comm. But mine was NIB with all its papers etc.

There's nothing more beautiful than a handy, dependable and well worn rifle. Nothing. If you love it and it shoots, then a few hundred $ is peanuts.
 
so you want to take a new " fancy " rifle and go hunting with it ......... why not ?
it is not like winchester won't produce more of them .

it is not like it is an original , pristine condition , rifle that your going to take hunting and beat the crap out of .
your taking a run of the mill rifle , with some woodwork and engraving on it out hunting , and that rifle looks pretty much the same way as the one produce before and after it .

how is your 800.00 fancy rifle any different than a 5 or 6 thousand dollar hunting rifle ?

You find the once in a life time perfect buck.
Whatcha gonna do?
Not shoot your perfect rifle or bang, hang and mount that buck?
Just think of the pretty pictures you could take with your rifle and buck mount.

Ok maybe some clarification on this thread is in order.

1) I love winchester lever action rifles.
2) I want one with a crescant shaped butt plate
3) I want one chambered in 30-30

Now Ive been looking trying to find one that matches the three things above but it isn't the easiest.

I've seen these "collectible" winchesters for sale for some time and some just happen to match the three qualities above.

Problem is the damn things cost twice as much as a standard winchester.

I was asking what people think of someone hunting with one of these "collectibles" as if I bought one I didn't want to get flamed for "ruining" it's value.

Personally I don't give a crap as a gun is a gun and should be used as a gun.

I'll call it easier if you find me the stock to purchase right now as there is a Winchester in the EE right now. I have yet to even see a stock for sale with a crescent plate.
 
Have you called Western Gun Parts yet to ask? Or placed an ad on the EE to see if anyone else has one? You will never know till you ask. Your call just not the way I would do it. I have a model 1894 made in 1900 already but it was a fluke buy-buzzard luck. I have bought and sold stocks on the EE and had great success with it. Or you could go the expensive way and buy an old gun. I would have just cut curvature in the buttstock and added a curved steel plate to it but then thats me. A bandsaw and a sanding drum would knock that off in an hour. Even a hand operated scrollsaw is capable if not a tad slow.

Ive placed on ad on the EE for the firearm qualities Im looking for yes and have a couple replies so far and waiting for more info from the seller.

But I certainly fail to see how buying a gun then parts and swapping out is any easier than buying the full gun. Im in no hurry to buy one and can easily wait for the right one to come about.
 
30-30 Winchesters are easy to come by and fairly inexpensive but not likely with the stock you want. I am just saying that if you find a reasonable 30-30 then just put the buttstock on it you want and go shoot it. Should take just about anything. 1 bolt does it. But it sounds like you want the whole package and if thats what you want then go for it. Just a note to advise that there are other options. If you keep the buttstock it came with then if you change your mind you can always change it back. My fave lever is a Savage 99c in 308. Detatchable mag to boot. But I really love my 1894 38-55 too with the irons and 26in barrel. I will hunt that and its 110yrs old. I like them too but am not hung up on the curved buttstock. I would not hesitate to mod if that were my choice.

Go for it. When you really think about it, $800 in the firearm world isn't "that" much money.
 
Cresent butt plate

Had a NEW IN BOX 1871/1971 Winchester 1894 NRA centennial musket. FULL WOOD/peep sight. finally decided i will be gone to the HAPPY HUNTING GROUNDS long before it will be worth much more than the purchase price, so i now reload and shoot it, alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!its comfortable and accurate. was going to buy a COMPOSITE STOCK for a 94 for about $85, but bought a pound of powder and 2 boxes of SIERRA 170 grainers. another right decision:agree:
