SEI gas cylinder lock on Norinco?

I recently bought a 2007 norinco M14 but it dose not have a front sight. The barrel was chopped to 18.75" and the muzzle was threaded 1/2x28 TPI.
Will a SEI gas cylinder lock screw onto a norinco barrel?? I would like to move the front sight to the gas cylinder lock but I am open to suggestions. Or can anyone tell me if a regular flash hider will screw onto the re-threaded barrel??

A SEI Gas lock sight is a Standard thread.................Norcs are a metric thread...............there was a metric gas lock front side made at one time, but it is no longer available......;)......IIRC, SEI was going to do a run of metric gas locks, but I don't know if that ever happended.......

I have the metric gas lock your talking about. Works great but none of my tools fit the damn thing.

Me personaly. I would send my whole gas system to the doc and get it unitized then get him to slap the front sight to the top of the gas block instead of the gas lock. As this would eliminate any loss of zero issue's caused by dis-assembeling & re-assembeling the rifle.

Then it's not the same one...............the one's I am talking about had no issues with the fit of the gas lock wrenches that were on the market...........All I will say is that they were made in B.C................:D

I'm pretty sure that IOT do so, you should(or have to) send your barrelled receiver with gas system to Thomas for the mod.

Minute tolerance differences from the spline cuts that the gas system rides on may cause an effect on placement of the dovetail mount. Therefore, you shouldn't just send your gas assembly.

makes that gas lock front sight for the NORC M14S.

He was out of stock for quite a while, but I got a notice from him a couple of months ago that he had made up some more.

Personally,
I like my front sight out as close to the muzzle as I can get it,
like the one on the M14 in the pic below.

I'm no fan of gas lock front sights on chinese barrels..... correctly spec'd US made barrels is a different matter.
the problems i run into with chinese barrels and gas assemblies are as follows.... and these issues are VERY common through all chinese rifles i've worked on both newer import and old.

first, on many barrels i am finding issues with splineway locations being slightly left or right of axial center
AND on a great many gas assemblies, the mounting splines are also not true to top dead center..... so, on these rifles, with one or both of the issues above, NO gas lock sight on this planet will correctly index... one must install and then vice up the barrelled action and move barrrel index to coincide with the gas lock front sight post.
this is why i created the Ultimate front sight mod, which permanently attaches a front sight dovetail to the gas assembly forward ring. We must have your barrelled action and gas assembly together to fit this mod specifically to your rifle.

I agree with Laz in that optimal front sight placement is preferred to be as close to the muzzle as possible.... but most of my clients having the UFS mod done have been VERY pleased with the results. I heard word that a new front sight muzzle device is being made right now that will be the perfect solution for shorty barrelled rifles..... I have no involvement, but i've seen the drawings and gave my thoughts..... and this product will be a winner when it hits the market.... so much so that it will replace gas lock sights AND my UFS sight mod.

At this time I ONLY offer the UFS mod for those booking shorty m14 packages

Yankee Hill Machine makes a ring clamp front sight base that attaches to thier muzzle devices and is adjustable for index once the flash hider/muzzle break is mounted. For several clients i have had the NAV-14 flash hider turned down at the rear to accomodate this YHM front sight ring clamp and those clients were VERY pleased with the result. for thisyou must source the YHM part, purchase one of my NAV14 flash hiders and pay for the machining mod to the flash hider to accomodate the YHM part. I'm not sure what dealers here in canada source YHM parts but fabsports may be a good place to start.

Any chance of getting more info on this piece or when it might be ready. If its as good as you say I might just wait for it to become available and pick one up for my rifle.

no idea my friend. I have zero involvement other than I was emailed cad pics and told they are working on it. I suggested making a version that mounts to 1/2 x 28 with a castlenut in that thread as the part does duplicate that part of the standard m14 flash hider castlnut opening and dovetail. the folks making these are here on cgn, but it's not my place to say who, if they see this and comment that would be great.

Laz I dare say I'll take credit that the YHM option when you were talking about making a clamp sight a la Mini 14 option a couple years back but problem being that chinese barrel diameter tolerance vary, I mentioned the YHM sight+flash suppressor ;)

the clients providing me with the YHM part, purchased from fabsports some months ago. maybe try brownells if all else fails?
surprised that no one in canada has made a similar option.... yet :D

I designed such a setup a while back as well,
and turned the idea over to Sean Rauch,
who was already making his excellent Miceluk/Dlask style .30 caliber bore, 1/2" X 28 TPI compensators designed specifically for the shorty M14 conversions.

The idea was to turn a smaller diameter O.D. shoulder at the rear of the comp, and a matching I.D. collar with the M14 style front sight base machined in. I wanted TWO clamping screws, for the ultimate holding power, to resist rotation. Other than collar dimensions,two screws, and the location/height of the front sight base, specialised for the shorty barrels, my design was similar to the YHM design, which was intended for the original uncut 22" M14 barrels.

Maybe Sean can chime in as to if/when he is bringing this modification to his M14 comps to market???
