.270-.308 Winchester

For loading data, Ackley has some (though Ackley's data is only a rough guideline). He thought highly of the cartridge.
If one simply uses 7mm-08 data and reduces loads by 2% for the same bullet weight, he'll be alright. As always, start low and work up. Regards, Bill.

I love the 260 Rem - got two, have owned a 7-08 and will not buy another. I would try a 27-08 just for kicks though :) kinda like how a 25-284 is more interesting than a 25-06 but does the same thing but with more kewl factor

But what rifle would be the best to build it on? Short action 700? Ruger Hawkeye? I like the Ruger because it's a CRF action. I can't help but envision a stainless fluted barrel though...and definitely a laminate stock. Brown, grey? Hmmm...so much to ponder. 24" barrel would likely be the way to go. Most of my hunting is in the bush with shots under 200 yards but could get further shooting. What do you guys think?

Thats exactly what I did....worked great. :)

Nothing wrong with 130's @ 3000. At least the brass and bullets are readily available. Even some factory cartridges can't say that...

I think the .270 redding is slightly different, being a .243 necked up to .277. Body taper and shoulder angle apparently give it a bit more case capacity than a .308 necked down to .277.

Are guys building this wildcat to get around caliber restrictions in Ontario? While it does sound like a bit of a neat little cartridge, I'm not sure if a fellow would gain anything over the "old" .308 win in terms of bringing down game...

What?
The .243 is the .308 necked down to .243 with no changes to body taper and shoulder angle. The .270 Redding is the .308 necked down to .270, or the .243 necked up to .270. Same thing. No more case capacity.

I just had mine done to say I had something ###y that no-one else had ,the ballistics sounded very good (better than actual) and I like the 270 but not the long action ,when Browning came out with 270 lever which in my mind looked and felt ugly I bought a BLR 308 and had rebarrelled ,I don't know anything about caliber restrictions in Ontario but again I live 500 miles north of Toronto and we have a lot of leaway here, we can even hunt on Sundays.

I would go stainless sa Rem 700 action, 22" barrel, either Mountain contour in a McMillan Edge or Ti take off or sporter contour in a McMillan Classic.

now this kind of blatent blasphemy should not be allowed in a public forum...there are impressionable minds here....:p..and I thought the 280 WAS better than the 270,...that's why I just bought another one,...although I do have a 270 in the cabinet,....just to say I have one....the 270-08?......a good 'smith could probably chamber one with a 260 reamer and a 270 reamer....a set of Redding 7-08 dies with the replaceable neck bushing and you're in business.

maybe I dont like the 7-08 because I had one in a Model Seven SS. Didn't care much for the rifle, just didn't feel right. I'll take a 700 any day over a m7

i chambered 4 rifles to this cartridge and it is a good one.the whole idea was to build ultra lightweight sheep hunting rifles for people who are still stuck in the oconnor frame of mind.it is very accurate with good velocities.the book WILDCATS has a good deal of load info if anyone is interested. regards, bob galloway

I ordered my dies SB 270-308 FL direct from RCBS and paid about the same as buying any other dies here in Canada ,this was 10 years ago and at that time no problems with USA border ,don't know how it would be now but if a guy can still get it direct then the cost and delivery should still be similar.
