Pistol dilemma!

What would you recommend/chose?

Ok I am really looking forward to purchasing a pistol as soon as my RPAL gets in my eager hands, BUT I am stuck in between a rock and a hard place: the Norinco NP-58 in .40 S&W or the Norinco 1911 Sport TT. They both offer just what I need, I don't have a large budget at all I'm a student and with range costs I don't have much choice (and yes I know .22's are dirt cheap, but they just don't float my boat). I have had the chance to fire the Norc 1911 I really liked it, I did also fire a .40 S&W but that was from a M&P. I also looked through some reviews, not much came up with the NP58 but from what I did read it is just fine. So I ask you all, what do you recommend? Any certain precautions to take with either one?
 
Look at ammo costs first, they will far outstrip the initial cost of the pistol after a bit. I would recommend something in 9mm before either .40S&W or .45ACP, strictly for the lower ammo costs. The NP-22 is the same gun as the 58, just in 9mm and it shows as in stock at the moment.

I'm sure you've already decided to buy the .45 then?

I've played with many a pistol. Glock in 9mm is now my favorite.

Don't hesitate to buy the .45, shoot it till you want something different.

Of your choices I would pick the 1911. With your budget can you afford to shoot .45? You can get the 1911 in 9mm, it's a lot cheeper to shoot.
ps. it's worth the wait
 
The quintessential semi-auto pistol is the 1911. So buy the 1911, and fo ammo, reload. Buy a cheap single stage Lee press...one on the EE earlier today for 30 bucks or a turret (preferred), dies, scale, autoprime or safety prime if you get the turret, and you can save a lot of money, or shoot a lot.

I have an NP58 and a couple of Norkie 1911s. All shoot well enough. Bought them used at great prices off the EE and will likely keep them a long long time.
 
Thanks you guys for all the great help so far, as much as I love the 1911 and the .45 it really will be too much for me at this point I think, I don't feel ready to commit myself to reloading as of yet I do plan to pick it up in the future. But then again, it is a 1911 and who can go wrong with a 1911??

I have also considered the NP-22 in 9mm, but I'm keeping the 9mm open until I have the money for a...yes...Glock :redface:. Reason being I saved up some money from when I worked in the summer to put towards some guns, some of it is going towards an SKS and the other portion to either one of these pistols.

I am leaning towards the NP-58 a bit more at this point, just the only thing that worries me is does it have a track record like the Norc 1911?
I feel like pre-pubescent girl obsessing over those tools from Twilight, not knowing which one really is my favourite...ignore the terrible analogy but you get the point...:(
 
If you're on a budget 9mm is the answer.
You can always get the Norinco Sig clone in 9mm and then flip it once you have more cash saved for that Glock.
Shooting .40 or .45 is going to be pricey along with those range fees you're looking at spending $100+ per trip. (assuming you're putting a few hundred rounds down range) It adds up fast.

You actually save money when buying the Glock you really want... :redface:

You don't take a loss on the original firearm. In depreciation and added parts and mods. If you want a Glock in 9mm (I know I do!) Just go out and get one for $600. It will last you longer than you can afford ammo for.:)
 
Slightly off topic:

I think myself you can hardly go wrong with a S&W M&P in 9mm.
Cheap to shoot (even if you dont reload) and the changeable grip is not an option for many other pistols. They have very nice triggers, and my friend's M&P Pro, was very accurate right out of the box.

If someday I buy a 9mm, this handgun would be it.

Doesn't matter who makes it... Best goddamn handgun in the world. lol.

I've got the Norc 1911, and I'm currently spending more money buying cool stuff for it... If the AR15 is "grown man lego" then the 1911 is for broke hobos like me. $100 gets you a new trigger, spring kit, stainless parts and full length guide rod... A bit more and you're rocking something totally custom. PLUS, its a 1911.
 
good thing you're thinking about buying a norc. save more money and set yourself up with a nice reloading station. you really won't notice a huge difference in prince for 9mm or 45acp when reloading your own.

reloading press would be my second purchase after buying a firearm.

Just buy yourself a used Ruger mk 1 or 11 or 111. Then with the saved money, buy a few bricks of bulk ammo, and shoot yourself damn silly at the range. I shoot between 500 and 1k of .22 each time I go to the range. Takes me HOURS. For the same money, you could shoot for MINUTES with a 9mm, 40, or .45acp. Just saying is all, someone had to, and I'm glad its me. There are some awesome .22 1911 copies for sale by our local sponsors in the 4-5 hundred dollar range, hearing some good range reports too. Just options for you.

i guess you're one of the few that really enjoy 22's for hours and hours :p I love 22's and it's great to have at least 1 22 rifle or handgun, but it gets boring VERY quick, and less challenging very fast.

what I find challenging is trying to get good with a centerfire pistol if I can only afford 50 or 100 rounds a month. I can afford MANY more shots with a
.22 and It can be just as hard, if not harder to be consistent with one.
Its not to say I don't own centerfire pistols, I just rarely shoot them anymore.
I just make the targets harder to hit with the .22
But to each their own.

^ This just made me lean towards the NP58 even more. As much as I love that Norc 1911 there is just something about that NP58 that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, once again bad explanation. :redface:

As for a .22 I like them, but I don't know if I would be happy buying a restricted .22 handgun, the way I look at it is if I am going to go through the hassle of getting a restricted (Ontario) I would not really want a .22, a 10-22 no problem, but as far as pistols go I don't really want a rimfire right now.

But thanks to the poll I keep bouncing back to the 1911, but something inside just tells me I would be happier buying the NP-58
 
Go .45 - It is really not such a powerful gun - check the energy online and reloading is going to bring the cost down . Make friends with someone who casts and .45acp will shoot for cheaper than .22 Stingers.

9mm is the best for girls.
