Took the SVT-40 out this weekend for opening season, tons of deer everywhere. Popped this fat little doe at 175 yards with open sights, dead on with PVRI 150 grain soft points.

This gun is loud. I wear hearing protection when I go to the range or target shooting, but don't usually where it when I'm hunting, and often very little bother to hear one or two shots when taking game. This thing is FLIPPIN LOUD. My ears rang for two days. I don't own any guns that make as much noise as this thing. If I take it out again, I'm bringing some of the little foamy ear protectors.

Just a warning to anyone who owns one of these and wants to hunt with it. It shoots awesome, but it will blow out your ear drums.

No, can't take it off. Not concerned about the recoil but its original, gotta keep them the way they were made, or closest to it. Its an awesome shooting rifle. Can't wait to get out to some matches with it. This one is a contender.

Its an OK doe, there is much bigger ones to be had yet, I had an itchy trigger finger:D

I can't wait for 1the first Monday in November myself... either going to be an M1 carbine or an FN49.

And I like your style Fiddler... anyone hump a guddam Tok around for deer hunting is "Da Man" !

I find this SVT ( only one I tried) likes the 150 gr better than the 180s or the very few other rounds available. I used 150 SP PRVI at about 175 yards. The deer was angled towards me . The shot went in the front of her front leg, out through the bone in the other front leg, and took off a piece of the ventricle just above the heart. She ran 30 feet to a dead drop.



I agree, anyone can hit a deer with a $6000 rifle and scope. This is much more challenging and fun. I still have a Mosin, 2 SKS, and a lever action to
"break in". My problem is to not use all my tags in the same morning.

We have more than average, places that big game season doesn't start til November, but there are a few zones where there is less hunting preasure and they open up early. Most of these zones are too hardcore for the city whimps, but I'm fine with that.

get a sleave machined 1 or 2 thou smaller than the outside diameter of the muzzle break ,grease it up , then press it over the brake , sealing it off .

everything stays original , and you get to keep your hearing .........
 
OUTOFTOWNER is qute right about that. First ones were called "Wolf Ears" and now half of Hong Kong is making them. Work. NOT expensive, either.

ANYTHING with a muzzle-brake is gonna be noisy. Absolute worst I ever heard was an SKS, believe it or not. Barrel was cut back, big muzzle-brake, FA switch and a 75-round mag in a single burst. Loud. Real loud! Our Government now protects us from that kind of fun.

MOST SVTs can be coaxed into well under 2 MOA. If ANGRYSOLDIER is getting groups like that, I can quite understand his screen name! I would be, too! What ammo? Some batches of old milsurp were right dodgy (primers, usually) but decent ammo should not do that! How far is it throwing the brass? LOTS of possibilities. Same troubleshooting procedures as for an FAL.

Season here starts right after Armistice, traditionally: almost 2 months yet. I think the NDP is hoping that we all get lost in the snowdrifts so the 'yotes can have lunch when we run out of ammo! If the pretty wild doggies eat all the hunters, then all the beautiful little bambis will be able to continue munching out on the farmers' feed and fouling what they don't want right now. This puts the price of beef up by about 30 percent despite that stupid woman in Terronna who announced on television that she didn't care "if all the Farmers in Western Canada go bankrupt; I get MY meat at Dominion!"

Here is a wound update, took these when I skinned it out. I'm really impressed with these 150 grain PRVI soft points. For a twenty dollar box of rounds, they put out. I've only shot 3 animals with these and have had the same results every time. They expand well in a medium sized animal. The last pic is the expansion from one side of the rib cage to the other, there was a 1 1/2 inch hole going out.

The one's I've shot looked to be fairly accurate as well. I'll be testing out one of mine later with a scope and some reloads. It'll be interesting to see just how accurate they can get.

Beautiful rifle. Other than the German maching guns, sTG44 etc, this is my favourite WWII rifle. They shoot great, look cool and have a lot of modern features.
