Please excuse my ignorance, I have an AR-15 and have enjoyed shooting it and getting to know how to use it but now I want to change the flash hider and possibly remove the front sight post and put in a low profile gas block and get a longer rail for it. My question is, how do I remove the flash hider? I assume you just take a wrench and unscrew it but I have tried with all my strength to get it to come off but it won't budge and I'm afraid that I will wreck the barrel... Any suggestions? Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure:

Now as for the front sight, I assume I take a punch and punch the two bolts out or whatever they are called and it would just slide off, but I have tried hammering with a punch to get the bolts out but they also won't budge...I don't want to scratch up my barrel trying to do this, so if you guys have any suggestions for this, please help :) Here are some more pics:

You will need to remove your rail and secure your barrel in a barrel vise. Sometime, it's very hard if not impossible to remove your flash hider without destroying it.

I managed to remove my flash hider without a vise... didn't find it overly difficult.

IIRC, flash hiders are counter threaded, so keep that in mind.

Will it hurt it if I don't have a barrel vise? and Onagoth, does that mean I have to turn it to clockwise?

Thanks again guys,
Josh

Yeah, Flash hider, assuming it wasnt "tacked" anywhere...... just take a wench and remove it.
And front gas block is removed by knocking out those pins.

They may be tapured, if so place your punch on the small side and hammer away.
Those pins can be in there fairly tight so a far amount of pressure might be needed.
When you get the pins out you can slide the sight off muzzle side. Keep in mind the gas tube will still be connected..... you will need to use a smaller punch on the sight to remove the gas tube. (your fourth picture, little hole to the left of the barrel)

Because of the amount of force needed to do these task's you MAY want an FSB Block for knocking out the pins..... and an upper receiver block to allow your upper to go in a vice.

It won't hurt, but you may want to remove the scope. It will undoubtedly take some force

Basically, I laid my rifle on my lap (muzzle pointed to the right) and pressed the receiver into my thighs. Take and adjustable wrench and place it on the flash hider and pull it towards you (over top of the barrel)

Barrel blocks from Brownells, makes it easy. You will need to put it in a vise. I had a LMT fh that took a massive amount of torque to remove. So manufacturers use thread locking compounds on their FHs, others dont.

Strip your forend and remove the scope. It does help to have barrel blocks to secure the barrel in a vise when working on it.
As mentionned, the pins may be tapered. I can't tell from the photos if they are. If they are tapered, attack the smaller end. If the barrel is held dead solid, it is easier to drive out the pins. If the barrel can move, this will absorb some of the blow. Use a short starter punch, and a fairly heavy hammer.
If you suspect a locking product on the FH threads, heat the thing up enough to fry spit.
Threads are standard right hand.
