So,

I just recently purchased my first shotty, an 88 field in 12gauge 28"bbl (thanks to my loving wife). I haven't had a chance to shoot it, i have however cycled the action several times. I like it and appreciate the quality of it for the price i've paid (notice i justified that with price....).

I'm wondering if there are any other owners out there who can give recommendations or insight into care, maintenance, and changes / modifications for this shotgun.

I'm looking forward to going birding in a few weeks - hopefully I can get to the range and get used to the feel.

Thanks -- Mike.

A great gun at a great price. My 88 works better than my 870 which cost almost twice as much. As for mods I have only ever wanted to do a top folding stock. ATI makes the one I want but as usual Marstar is sold out :(

excellent

Has anyone added any different choke tubes or barrels? If so what have you found to be a good combination; any draw backs or difficulties?

I'm looking at the 18" from the 535 with an IC choke or at least adding the IC to my 28 to start.

Shoot it lots! It will get better/smoother with use. I just sold my Mav 88 to fund a new to me semi 12ga, parting with it really was a hard decision to make. I agree about adding a limb saver type pad, it's a light gun and you will feel every once of recoil. You may also want to add some lead shot for weight inside the stock, that will help with recoil and balance.

I've had my Mav 88 Security for about 6 months and really enjoy shooting it. I bought it primarily for the light weight as it's great for camping and quading. I would definitely do something about the factory buttpad. I ended up removing the buttpad, sawing off 1 inch from the synthetic stock, and installing a slip-on Limbsaver pad, really helps with the slugs.

I added a sling after I installed the swivel studs that came with the gun (requires drilling in to the buttstock). Finally, I added a Tru-glo green snap-on sight to the barrel. This is my first fibre optic sight and I am amazed at how much light it captures.

All in all, this shotgun is a great value and one I hope to keep around for a long time.

Had mine a couple years, no problems at all. Threw a Blackhawk Knoxx folding stock I had laying around on it, works just peachy!

I have lots of fun with my Mav 88 security although with it's pistol grip and full power slugs it's quite a beast to hold onto. It's overall short length makes it good to carry in the ATV for protection in the bush.

I also have the regular stock and a 28" VR barrel for it which makes it quite versatile.

Very good gun for it's price.

Thanks everyone for the great details -- seems that there are many happy owners. I look forward to using mine tomorrow down at the range (report to come). Thanks for the details on the snap on fibre optic sites and the limb savers.

I bought mine a few months ago with a 24" barrel. It does a good job on raccoons, and is still short enough through the trees. Good gun for a great price.

My first shotgun a few years ago.
Like an idiot I sold it a year later.

It was a nice light shotgun.
Pretty much any Mossy 500 item will fit it.

I still have a side saddle around for it collecting dust....guess I should sell it someday.

I love the access to the cartridge stop I had through the cartridge lifter in the bottom.

If it comes with the pistol grip, throw that in the garbage and stick to the regular stock as 3" magnum loads are painful with just the pistol grip.

I wouldnt trade my pistol grip for anything other than a hogue tamer. I tried a bunch of different stocks and keep going back to that little plastic grip. It just fits my hand so nice. And yes, the trigger group is plastic. Mine has been absolutely reliable to the point I now trust my life with it, plus its the smallest, lightest gun I own. very happy with it

1 more ....

Just wondering if anyone has used any chokes in their 88 aside from the accu-choke? What works what doesn't....

what have you found to be a good make for different things... I'm interested in upland birds and skeet / trap.

I use the accuchokes in mine! Modified for trap, full for doubles, and for the birds or buckshot its improved cylinder.
