How much is too much?

I have done some reading on the CFC's website but am unable to find out just how much ammo it is legal to possess. Anyone have an idea? I think the line I read was an we're allowed an amount reasonable to the calibre of the rifle. What does that mean though? Larger calibre = less possession?
Pre-Y2K I worked at walmart and bought a 'few' .22 and 12guage rounds, and often wonder what would happen if my home was ever searched.
I have read enough stories of small town law enforcement and the stories always have a line in there "Police confiscated X000 rounds of ammunition" in part I believe to make people look like maniacs.
On another note, does anyone know the lifespan of more recent ammo? Should I be storing it with a
drying agent or anything to control the moisture? I need to join a club and start using up some of it,
or at least start replacing it with newer stock.

There isn't any upper limit on how much ammo you can store. There are limits on powder and primers if you reload (it's a lot). It does obviously need to be stored to the letter of the law.

Good ammo can last 10-20 years at least if it's kept relatively dry and cool. Unless you live in an extremely hot/humid area I wouldn't bother with dryers or anything...just start shooting the crap out of it :)

What you find reasonable and what I find reasonable can be two different things! I shoot 23-26 matches a year, so at the start of season having 20,000 rds in assorted calibers in my lockup isn't unreasonable for me. Reasonable depends on your perspective!

Quality control of North American ammunition manufacturers is so good today that if you store your ammo in a cool dry place, in original packaging, where the temperature is consistant, it will be good for 70-80 years.

That's because it isn't in the Firearms Act or the CC, but in the NRCAN regs for explosives storage.

There isn't any upper limit on how much ammo you can store.

This is not true at all.

Take a read through this thread, it pretty nicely sums up the details:

The part you are concerned with is you are allowed to store up to 225kg of net explosive quantity in ammo. NXQ means 225kg of the powder in the rounds. It works out to pretty staggering amounts of ammo if you figure it out and I doubt that very many private individuals would ever get close.

For instance:

.223 @ 25gr = 138,600 rounds
.308 @ 45gr = 77,000 rounds
.338 Win Mag @ 70gr = 49,500 rounds
.22LR @ 3.0gr = 1,155,000 rounds

The Firearms Act uses the term "reasonable" when determining how much ammo you can store. This term is ambiguous and vague on purpose. It allows the law to set the limit at whatever "reasonable" amount they see fit. For all intense purposes, they can determine "one round of ammo" as a "reasonable" amount and if you have two rounds your storage is now unreasonable.

Limits set by NRCAN for powder have already been noted.
