Hunting Small Game in the Rain??

I know there are some advantages to deer, and other bigger game because it takes out their sense of smell and hearing. This can help out a hunter greatly!

Having the bush to yourself, advantage.
Realizing that you aren't made of sugar and won't melt. Priceless.

If you aren't picky about the weather you go out in you will get many more days in the field.

Squirrel hunting works better in a mild rain for some reason. It seems to make them more active to move around.

rain can work against you too... the sound of a grouse or rabbit in the leaves helps I often hear them, before I see or flush them.

I hate getting wet to be honest I'd rather predator hunt in -25 sitting in a snow bank then walk the bush in the pouring rain deer hunting. As some have pointed out there are advantages and rain won't hurt you. I guess it's more of a choice for some or less of one for those who hunt only a few times a year you take what weather you get.

I went goose hunting in the rain last week. It was fun. Hunting in calm rain is always great. Hard rain = no fun.

Getting the bore of your firearm full of water sucks when you're hunting in the rain. Bring a roll of masking tape so you can put a piece of tape over the end of the barrel after each shot.

I have a hard time hearing animals in the bush depending on how many leaves are on the trees and how hard it's raining.

Wearing earplugs on the way to your hunting spot will help sharpen your hearing once you're there.

I only use iron sights in the rain.

Being cold and wet in a tree stand sucks. The rain is the perfect opportunity to stalk.

Some animals (grouse and rabbits) seem less active in a cold morning rain. They tend to become active as a cold morning raining is abating - but before noon.

I love hunting in misty rain light drizzles its relaxing and I find great success when hunting. Mostly with hounds they will never loose a wet rabbit. Also I can sneak up and stalk much easier

For grouse it depends. Light drizzle can be very, very good. They tend to hold well & it doesn't seem to alter their daily routine. The moist leaves & soft ground allow you to be extra quiet when pussyfooting their favourite hangouts/coverts.

The harder the rain gets, the more they will move into heavy cover & sit it out. I've gotten them when it starts to pelt down but almost always pushing them from thicker/coniferous cover. Ambient noise starts to become an issue too - as the rain volume increases your chance of hearing a bird move/shuffle dramatically decreases.

That's my experience without a dog.

A storm or single day of heavey rain isn't gonna be good for small game, they're gunna hunker down in heavey cover and stay put. If its been raing for more then 1 day they will move around and feed, but they'll stick close to dense cover.Llight rain or mist not so big of an issue. Big fluffy slow falling snow, you better believe I'm gunna be out hunting if only to enjoy the ambiance.

My experience is that small game sit very tight during rain, rabbits and pheasants....it's not fun, even the dogs can't pick up scent as good I find. After a good rain, that's a different story.

hunting in rain

you have the advantage of it being quiet , no leaves making noise when your walking through them . not much good for small game if it's raining to hard .

I must be a sissy, I don't small game hunt in rain anymore. I used to live on the Wet Coast and I would rain-hunt then as in the fall, there wasn't much option many days. I have since been moving around the North, and Alberta, and see little reason to ruin my nice guns. I likely hunt with too pretty of small game guns these days, and I've become busy in life to the point accepting just the beautiful fall days isn't a bad thing.

I still just can't help but chuckle everytime I see zokakoka's avatar. Hello zombie fantasizer/mall ninja, was that taken while mom was out of the house?
