M40 in 6.5x47 Lapua?

Did anyone else catch Ultimate Weapons on the military channel last night regarding their top ten sniper rifle sytems? First off, wow, good on you AI and Barret, they had at least 60% of the top ten if I remember right.

But the part I just caught the tail end of was the guy talking about an M40 in 6.5x47 Lapua and how it was working it's way into the military as a replacement for the 7.62 NATO (.308). I found this hard to believe until I put their data into Exbal. Wow, I couldn't believe it but at the velocity of 3000 fps that they were claiming with a 140 gr VLD the bullet still has in excess of 1000 ft/lbs of energy at 1000 yrds!

I've never looked at this cartridge before, but recently a fellow member whom I bought a Rem 700 22-250 in a 2.0 AI told me that he was selling it to build one. Now I want one! Hey noneck, let's here what you have to say.
 
It will be a foggy friday that 7.62 gets replaced.The sheer cost of replacing all the weapons systems that fire 7.62 would be astronomical.Not to mention the fact that some probably wouldn't function properly on it.
With that said it is an interesting round.

If somebody on that show claimed a 6.5X47 was being "worked into the Military" shows the quality of the research that went into that program. Introducing a new cartridge to any major Military is a massive undertaking that would take years.

If this is the show that listed the Chey Tac as the #1 sniper rifle of all time I LOL...
 
It was the same show that the Cheytac was number 1. As for the replacement of the 7.62, I agree with the above post, just from a replacement standpoint the astronomical number of 7.62 out there is mindblowing. I cannot see them replacing it either. Nonetheless, quite an impressive round from my standpoint.

The link above is where I got the data, not from the show. I don't know anything about the cartridge so I searched it and then took a best case scenario.

But if that was not enough Obtunded you are correct, I believe I have made a mistake and had utilized a .264 bullet instead of .257 for comparison. When I made the correction, and left the same velocity with a 115 gr VLD I achieved a theoretical 1000 ft/lbs of energy out to only 600 yrds. Big difference, my bad.
 
The cartridge that is being introduced (reintroduced) is the 300WM. Rem has received a very tasty contract to supply/modify rifles to this chambering.

The Lapua is a very nice target rd but small for this bore size and the heavy VLD's we prefer to shoot LR. Even in a match rifle, the Lapua is going to be 100 to 300fps slower then the other options being used. And these are rapidly being supplanted by even bigger monsters.

I think the 6.5 Creedmore would have a better chance of making it as a military rd and this is likely a non issue.

Even the 6.5 Grendel which has decent civy success is a non issue for the US military. maybe the Les Bear version will have better luck.

At any rate, the 30cal's aren't likely to be displaced anytime soon and given the trends, the toys are getting bigger, not smaller.

Whatever happend to the 6.8SPC? :)
