.308 or 30.06 ?

I have taken large game with both guns and actually prefer .308 cal over my ought six. I have found my .308's to be slightly more accurate than any of my ought six's. .308 cal is ballistically almost identical to 30-06 but much smaller cartridge. It is a way more efficient round. One of the most accurate sniper rifles is calibered in .308. Dont get me wrong I love both and between them have never really had to buy a 300 win mag.
 
I agree with sako as the 308 win uses up the case ,while the 30-06 (as does the 45/70 have too much case for the amount of smokeless powder it needs)

The 30-06 does still like the 30/30 always has a place in a hunters heart!

I have both, but the .308 is cheaper (powder burn) to shoot/practice with.

Now what is better for the zombie invasion ? Milsurp availability? Fondle factor? Your budget? And finally, Your LCV (look cool value) ?? :D ha ha ha

Seriously, select what is best for your tastes also! You will be the only one holding that boomstick in the stand/bench/firing line/ groundhog fields/coyote hide, etc, etc...

I bought my first rifle last year, and I had narrowed it down to either a Winchester M70 featherweight in 308 or a Remington CDL in 30-06.

I ended up with a 2008 Winchester M70 Sporter in .270, whcih will work just as well as either.

I still sort of want a .308, but I can't honestly say that it'd cover much in the way of non-overlapping territory.

The .308's shorter action will be more accurate, but when we're talking about shooting minute-of-deer rather than paper punching, I don't know if the difference is enough to count.
 
30-06 has a little more oomph, but .308 can be more accurate, with a little less recoil. 30-06 ammo costs a little more but not much. If your shooting a semi auto then .308 usually cycles better, because of the shorter stroke. A moose can't tell the difference it it got hit in the lungs with a 165gr .308 or a 180gr from a 30-06, he wont appreciate either.
 
If hunting is your #1 shooting sport then your better with 30/06

If target shooting is your #1 sport then your better using a .308

That sums it up, because they are very similar, but 30/06 ammo has a wider range of hunting ammunition, and .308 has better target ammunition.

30/06 has slightly more power, but its not by much.
 
If you cant kill it with a 308 or a 30-06 you probably need practise. More than adequate for pretty much anything with 4 legs. Might be a bit light for Griz. I hunt with both.

Go with the 30.06, better all around for big game. If shooting deer and want the most accuracy try and stick with 165 t0 168 grain loads. They are optimum for the caliber and trajectory.
 
Deer or moose, won't know the difference between the 30-06 and .308 or a dozen other cartridges. What ever the best deal is on the rifle and get a good quality scope and mounts. Many a rifle never reaches it's potential do to poor mounts and or poor scope. Search the threads and you'll find lot's of information on pretty much any rifle available. Check the EE'S and you'll find something well worth while used but not abused.
 
Hello all, I am new to this forum, so thank you for having me. I am not totally new to guns, as I already have a Parker Hail -06, BUT I am looking at getting a good used -06 for my 13yr old son.. used because I do not like the "new" packages of guns that come with only plastic magazines. Anyway..

Here's my question: I am looking to buy a used Savage Model 110, bolt action, comes with a Bushnell Elite 4200 Scope 3x9x40.... Only thing is.. It does not come with ANY Mag! Or even a drop plate!!! But, it still will top load 4 rounds +1!? Weird, haven't seen or even heard anything good or bad about that kind of gun.

Soo, can anyone here PLEASE inform me IF this is or can be a good gun, a bad gun, dud, too pricy, run away from it, or get it as fast as I can and run lol. Any expertise in this would be greatly appreciated as I am traveling 2 hrs to go see it tomorrow morning. It is one of the only used guns around I can find in a -06.

Btw- asking price is $300.00 <-- good or bad guys?

That's a good price especially with that scope, if it's in decent shape. Bring a flashlight and shine it down the bore to see if it's shiny or has dark spots which could mean rust or pitting, but could be just dirt, so if possible clean it first. If the bore is in good shape you have a heck of a deal. Even so, the scope alone is probably worth about $200.

The gun has what's known as a "blind mag" and is actually pretty common.
 
someone once said the 30-06 is a rainbow cartridge compared to the 308! I still vote for the 308. Love the short action. Got both, but the short actions usually get the call, unless my No.1A calls my name the loudest on hunting morning when I open the safe door, which it does on occasion.
 
Both are great calibers. But being new to the shooting/hunting sport, I would recommend starting out with a 308. Easy on the shoulder. Once you have learned the ropes, you can go to the 06 or whatever cal. you like. Who knows, you may in time end up like many of us, building up a collection of calibers ( its an addiction). Beware!!!
