first off I will bet my entire collection against that being made of stainless steel. I mean for God's sake it's a Cooey. Plate of some sort or jsut highly polished, as it clearly has been redone by a previous owner. I love my 60, enjoy.

Lets start bt saying that I'm not an expert. First off, nice looking gun!! My first impression would be, "someone spent alot of time stripping the blueing off of it and then polishing it!!" Which leads me to this question, how do you know its stainless? I have NEVER heard of and "special editions" to come out of Cooey which, if yours IS stainless it would be. Judging just by the pic, I would also say polished instead of SS because the take-down thumb screw and the bottom metal appear to be blued not SS. I would think that Cooey would make it ALL SS were they to do so.
My 2 cents. Very nice rig though!! :)
Cheers!!

regular steel fixtures that have been polished. Special editions would have better wood and all metal would be stainless. The short mag makes me think it is a model 600 or a modified tube. Sure not much room for the tube to move rearward to load another cartridge.Me also think the rear sight is on backwards also as it probably will not fit facing forward.

Hey toymaker,
I have come to consider you to be THE guru of .22s and such, but, unless I'm mistaken, the bolt seems open to me which would leave about that amount of the mag tube showing, no?
Cheers!!

And mentioning better wood, I re-did a 600 that had wicked cool good wood!! (really, it was nice!!) Since I don't know how to post pics here, goto photobucket, look up spacesaver101 and you can see mine.

Spacesaver....A Cooey Guru???? Hardly...I have only owned a Cooey 60 for a few days ( it had great wood too)....A young fellow liked it so I sent it to him. I had a few Cooey 64s that I took a liking to and did a lot of reading, searching and rehabbing on. I prefer the early Marlin bolts over the Cooeys. Even I can overlook the open bolt (OOPS I'm Sorry) lol...lol.. Many of the gun woods I have refinished, tended to have very interesting grains under the dark finish that was applied in the days gone by.

pc9,
Looks like I may have been sleep deprived when I made my last posts yesterday; the Cooey I re-did was a M60! As well it looks like someone has cut down the forearm then re-finished the stock at some point. I may be wrong but it does look different than mine.
Not to critisize your pics but cannot tell exactly what the finish on the metal is like. Is it sort of a satin finish or really polished? Personally I would re-finish the wood a little darker and make, at the very least, the top sides a very dull satin finish. I think that would look really classy!! Whatever you do, shoot it often and enjoy it!
Cheers!!

No such thing as an SS Cooey, of any kind. It's a Cooey with the bluing removed. Starting to rust as well. Nice stocks like that one weren't entirely unusual. Better wood wasn't as scarce or expensive in those days.
"...pre 1961 as it doesnt have a serial #..." Pre-1968. S/N's were required after 1968, but not before. The U.S. Gun Control Act of 1968 made 'em mandatory, Stateside and our lot followed along. Mind you, Winchester was also marketing Cooey's, Stateside under their own name. Winchester bought Cooey in 1961.
YouTube is good for some things. Don't know who the guy is, but he put together a very well done presentation. Note the quality of the stock. It could use a cleaning, but it's not low end wood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-VEMwcxr0k
