I've been sitting in this tree stand for about 45 mins now. Its opening weekend here in southern Ontario for Bow season deer. The excitement is still fairly high, but the sit and wait game is starting to get me, and I know it will only get worse.

What do you do keep yourself entertained/not fall asleep?

Apparently you bring your phone? :D

During my moose hunt the doggers are making noise, so I will track them mentally. I also run over scenarios, like "what I would I do if a moose ran past that way". I also try to Jedi mind kill squirrels that inevitably chatter in the tree right next to me.

I usually bring a book or magazine if its not too cold, I bring an Ipod with a single earbud and keep it on real low. Having a few snacks and lots of coffee helps pass the time too. For the most part its simply patience, I sat on stand all day for 7 days in -25 last year before I got the 11 point 148" buck I was after, it was certainly worth the wait.

Wow, you start to get bored at only 45 min  I spend the better part of the day on the first day of the hunt just soaking in the sights and sounds and smell of the woods before I worry about getting bored.

Try reading the Readers Digest, its small, has some somewhat interesting articles, mixed with some jokes, and the odd adventure story. Keep in mind, if its pretty cold out the pages make a bit of noise when you turn them.

Put out a handful of corn on the ground, and let the birds, squirrels etc. entertain you.

Get some small candy(ie: tootie roll) you would be amazed at how much time you can spend trying to get the candy out of the wrapper without making noise. :D

I talk to myself a lot. Running different scenarios through my head. I have solved many of the worlds problems this way.

I just relax and enjoy the scenery. I see how many birds I can identify by song and watch for a variety of animals, bugs, snakes. I will also enjoy quiet occasional snacks like chocolate! It is amazing what you can see and learn if you take the time and relax and watch.

You may get to see animals that you don't normally if you are just going for a hike. I once had a humming bird land on a twig right in front of me and sit there for a while, lynx, bobcat, fishers, raccoons, a fox that got very close, now know the sound of porcupines mating, the variety of sounds ravens make as well as other birds. You get to witness animals behaving naturally without the stress of them knowing a human is near. I loved watching that cute little fluff ball bear cub play. I remember watching a family of beavers cutting down trees and gathering branches then a baby beaver the size of a muffin climbed right by my foot and picked a small twig and swam back to the lodge so proud of its little twig.

Just relax and take it all in, you will miss it when your time in the woods is over.

I study the local flora and fauna whilst contemplating the vicissitudes of life. I do like making wild meat but I sometimes wonder if that is secondary to the unfolding of nature before me and the quite time for though.

Why are you hunting if you find hunting boring? Sitting in a stand or moving slowly through the bush IS entertaining or I wouldn't do it.

First 45 minutes, not good, l could see the last day, perhaps.
Look around, enjoy being out there, away from everything else, get down and wander if you need to, look around for signs of that big Buck, read a book if you have to.

I find the better physical shape you are in, the more easily it is to stay mentally focused & keen. If your fitness/health is not up to par, blood circulation issues can not only affect the limbs but also the head/mind ..... especially when sitting stationary for long periods of time.

I think to answer that question you should also mention how often you hunt. If I only got out on weekends, or a couple/few times a week I would concentrate on the hunting, which I do more often then not.
But, I bow hunt every day, twice during archery season. I am in a morning stand and another in the evening. I think I would go wacko if all I did was listen to the birds. I spend so much time in the trees with them that they would miss me if I was gone.
I use my Blackberry, I surf CGN and a couple other hunting sites, I communicate with my family and my poor wife who knows what to expect on October 1st. I run my business, I make appointments for the day so I know where I am going to be once I come out of my tree, and plan them so I can be back in it at a decent hour. Knock the Blackberry if you would like, but without it I would not be able to afford to hunt.
If I only hunted a couple times a week do to other obligations I would leave it home, or simply turned off.
The best part is that I hunt for a living, so when I do come down I am just going to someone else's property with a rifle and a uniform instead of my bow.
