Shoot Monster Grizzly
Jim Morgan and Orald Harrison of Wistaria, Burns Lake District, shot a huge silver-tip grizzly bear on Goat Mountain in the Whitesail Lake district. The measurements of the skin were- length nine feet and two inches- width eight feet and five inches; skull seventeen inches. It is said to be the largest bear ever shot in the district.

Also do you guys see the mark just above the nose on the snout? That was the shot that killed the bear. It charged Jim Morgan and he shot it in the face and it dropped only meters from them.

The only thing was the paper reported "skull seventeen inches".

I remember reading about that; I forget the name of the book (its on my shelf in NS) but from what I remember it charged him out of the blue one day and he took it down with one panicked shot from a .30-30 - it dropped within feet of him. The skull was large enough to bear all records, but by the time it was officially measured, it'd been dried considerably and passed between dozens of reporters and researchers, so it shrunk beyond the leading record. Even so, it wouldn't made it, even with the back blown out.

skull looks like it would be 17" long to me....

Skull score is length plus width....17 would be an average to small black bear skull. That thing is very big certainly much bigger than 17.

17 isn't the score, just the length of the skull. Back in 1938 not too many I think knew much about "scoring"
