I am about to purchase my first 9mm pistol and I have settled on either the Ruger SR9 or the Glock 17. They both have good reviews. I am kind of leaning towards the Ruger as it's thinner grip feels better in my hand. And no I don't want to spend a fortune on a 9mm. Opinions?

I've heard good things about the SR9.

Its almost a "Cheaper" glock if you look at them both.

Alot of people like the smaller profile and grip on the SR9 better, glock diehards will claim their glocks will shoot after being buried in a swamp for 100 years.

I had an SR9 as my first pistol and really liked it. Had such a good fit for my hands and was really easy to strip and clean. Quite accurate and never had issues with the trigger like some other people have complained about. That being said you can't go wrong with a glock... tons of aftermarket parts and accessories... I personally just think they're butt ugly and didn't feel right in my hands. Either one would be a great first pistol.

Hi,

Ruger builds solid, reliable and relatively inexpensive pistols. They're not exactly "pretty" but who needs pretty if they function as well as a pistol twice the price. The SR9 is a clone of the Kimber KDP but it's a little more robust, and it's a polymer-framed striker fired pistol like the Glock.

I owned a SR9 and never had a single problem with it. Naturally, my tastes have changed and I've moved on to more expensive and "prettier" non-polymer based pistols (e.g., STI, Kimber, Sig, Beretta, etc.).

You won't be disappointed with the SR9 as a first pistol. Cheers,

Do you get both in your hands ? I'M pretty sure that you didn't because after that the choice become realy easy. (psst, get the glock.)

I assume he's fondled both as he is mentioning the difference in grips. I have a G22 at work and while I shoot well with it, I don't like the grip (finger grooves are in the wrong place).

I am also looking at getting a SR9 and the P345. Try looking at rugerforum.com. Some great feedback there. I would use caution when getting a used one. I have been reading about a problem they have dry firing without a magazine. Doing so will damage the gun. Removing the magazine safety fixes the problem. But who knows what went on or if the first owner read the manual.

The SR9 is an excellent pistol. Relatively inexpensive and reliable. The only real downside is that if you want more than 2 mags (which it comes with), you could get sticker shock. The Ruger made mags for that pistol go for around $50 each

Yes. I held both in my hands at the sports store. I just felt more comfortable holding the Ruger. My first and only handgun which I still use is a High Standard target pistol. I have only fired a 9mm a few times and that was a Kimber ( can't remember the model) I couldn't hit the broadside of a ship with it. I guess it will take some getting used too.

I purchased a SR9 in 2008 post recall, ever since then my Glock 17 has been put on the back shelf. The SR9 is more ergonomic and a better feeling gun. Some people complain about the trigger pull and smoothness. It does have this concern when new and gets better after about 1000 rounds. There is a aftermarket trigger bar made for the SR9 call the Ghost Ultimate which drops the trigger pull down from 5-6 pounds to 3.5 pounds and makes the trigger as smooth as silk. I my opinion you can not go wrong with this striker fired pistol.

The SR9 is in awesome pistol, I've put thousands of rounds through mine and have had no issues yet aside from running out of ammo too quickly.
Get one and get rid of that pesky mag-disconnector. It smoothens out the trigger pull and you won't have to worry about dry firing with out the mag.
Its a great `bang' for your buck and I'm sure the after market support for it will pick up.

The Ruger SR9 is a great pistol, very accurate, which many fail to mention or realize, and it gives the user a lot more feedback than the glock, (easier to tell when a round is in the chamber) more robust and if it feels better in your hands you will shoot it better. .
