Since I recently installed a troublesome muzzle brake on my Archangel 10/22 I decided to take a closer look at my Norinco M4's flash hider.

It was difficult indexing the bottom of my Yankee Hill muzzle break so the section that is intended to keep dirt out is at the bottom. I managed to do this with great effort especially since it came with a crush washer.

Looking at my M4 the flash hider could be turned a bit to index perfectly like the muzzle brake I installed. I also noticed that they used a lock washer instead of a crush washer.

I love my M4 and have yet to have a failure of any kind so I am not complaining just wondering what others see when they look at their Norinco M4 flash hiders?

Colt used lock washers on their early models. Replacing the one on your norc with a crush washer would make it easier to index more precisely.

Yea its easy to fix, I've indexed AR muzzle devices with a wrench and the rifle pinned between my legs. You don't need to over think this one. If you are concerned about movement during fire (more and issue with a brake then a hider) Then add some red locktite.

We have new Crush Washers on our store in the AR section - www.neitarms.com

Or go old school and get a peel washer...

Thanks guys!

What is indexing?
Why does indexing matter in this case?
Does it mess your aim up or something?

It's called indexing when you have to line up a section of the muzzle brake/flash hider with the bottom of the barrel. The instructions with my muzzle brake said the part without the holes had to be indexed to the bottom of the barrel. I am sure it's no big deal unless you are doing a lot of prone shooting in the dirt but that is the reason to keep dirt out.

I guess i got lucky mine is fine, but i did have some very small scratches/dings on mine when i got it but i did not buy it to look at so i could care less... but for some reason i cant... :)
