CZ858 Fixed vs Folding Stock

Okay guys, I have asked something 5 question the last few days about a CZ 858, because I have really been on the fence, and could'nt decide to buy a CZ 858, a SKS and pimp it, or a Norinco M14 for my next gun, and I think that I have made up my mind to buy a CZ 858. My next question is:

What is prefered Fixed or Folding stock? For what reasons? The folding stock looks more military, but the fixed stock seems more practical for aiming?

Opinions please?
 
I ran a tac carbine course for two days with my folder 858 and had no problems getting a cheek weld to the stock, getting a good sight picture, and shooting very accurately. I like the look and compactness it offers, though it seems most people swap out either stock type for some god awful Magpul tupperware anyways.
 
I'm not a big fan of either because of the ergonomics. The Folder especially.

My favorite so far is an ACE Skeleton. There is a folding mech available as well. It's a little more traditional than the AR stocks.

Unlike AK, I canNOT get a good or even remotely comfortable cheek weld with the folder. I went fixed, and am happy I did....it comes up and points very well very quickly for me.

I painted it, scuffed it up with 220 sandpaper then flat black Krylon then matte clearcoat. It was still a bit too shiny, so I scuffed it up with 600 grit sandpaper and am happy with the result. Didn't even remove it to paint, just masked off the receiver with lots of old newspaper.

I would say with a shooter unused to the gun, the original stock is slightly more comfortable and easier to shoot accurately.


However. I had an 858 that had a Czech standard military folder on it for several years... I found I did get used to the cheek weld, and even used black hockey tape where I would put my cheek which helped a lot. You also see this in current czech military photos where the convenience of a folding stock and some tape far outweighs the initial ease of shooting a full length stock. I took the gun hiking a fair bit and the folding option helped a lot.

Then again, I'm using a standard buttstock again now :p

6 of one and half a dozen of the other :p You can always sell the stock you don't like.
 
I am not used to a folding stock, so I think I am leaning more towards one of the ###y plywood stocks.

When I take it to my hunt camp for 1 week of the year for deer season, it probably would get less weird looks than the folding stock. Then again, everyone up there will still probably think that I am hunting with a AK...LOL..

Not to complicate things but if you are thinking of the CZ 858-4V folder, it is restricted and thus just a range gun. If you want to hunt in the future you can remove the butt stock from a non resctricted and add a folder mechanism like the Stormwerk mentioned and use an ACE stock or a AR type with a buffer tube.

Do you guys think that as far as accuracy goes, that the folder compared to the beaver puke stock is pretty close when it comes down to it, and that it is more of a personal preference for cosmetic reasons?
 
So the folders are Restricted? I did'nt know that. I thought that if they have the 19 inch barrel then its Non Restricted. I am leaning towards a Wood Stock model anyways.

When I first decided on the 858 folder I wanted it as a range gun only for carbine matches and liked the tacticool factor. After reading some of the posts by Stevo here on CGN and Milsurp.com I decided to go with a AR type stock as it keeps things inline and gives more muzzle control and thus accuracy. You can still make it a folder if you use a folding AR type adaptor that NEA has promised and Stormwerks makes. As long as the folding mechanism accepts buffer tubes for the AR type stock.

Or you can use the ACE skeleton stock as pictured earlier in the thread - that was my intention with the 858-4V for the best of both worlds. But while waiting for NEA I purchased a non folding AR stock adaptor and use a Magpul CTR. It a great set up (thank you Stevo).

Just keep in mind what's restricted and what's not: you can make a folder out of a non restricted but you can't change how a gun is classified. With the set up I have (with a red dot scope) I think it would be great for hunting. But I can't - its a -4V and thus restricted.

If I was doing it all over I'd buy two: a non restricted 858 and a new shorty folder. One would have a ACE skeleton stock and one a Magpul.
