It seems that of all the pistols on the north american market, there are 4 which seem to have the repuation as highly effective, reliable, and just simply "good" pistols. This is deducted not only from the civilian use of these weapons, but from their widespread use in military and law enforcement.

Those 4 are as follows:
Sig Sauer p226
Beretta 92FS
Colt 1911A1
Glock 17 (or other models)

Which one of these pistols do you think is the best?

hey , this is a great site (probably the best in north america for us gun guys) , cool off with the rants about stuff that is obviously inflamatory. Its just a sure way to have 2 things happen. You get branded as a flaming troll, and then you get banned. Just try to have a bit of fun around here, and you will actually learn a thing or 2. Just respect your elders............ and lay off grandpa's hooch until you are legal age.

1911 is pretty broad...you are comparing a gun that ranges from 350.00 to 4000 and up. I chose the 1911 because I think a well smithed .45acp 1911 is everything a gun was ever ment to be.

Out of the box I might give it to the p226.

Where is CZ75/85 series and S&W M&P. You could add Tanfoglio to the list as well. I have one of each and they all go bang when you pull the trigger. Given your list I'll take a $4K+ 1911 From Wilson Combat over the other three though if this were a draw.

Of the four choices mentioned, I have only one (type) and have been familiar with it for the last 23 years.

1911...going strong after 99 years. Perhaps as long as the other three combined:D, somebody please tell me I'm right or wrong.

Out of what you've listed, the right answer is P226.

That is because "1911" covers every POS version ever built, from AMT to Taurus and beyond. "Glock" covers not only the 17, which is excellent, but the 30, which is seriously questionable, the 22, which won't run with a light attached, and so on. "Beretta" includes not only the 92, which is a good pistol, but every sketchy model they've ever released.

The p226 is the best model from SIG...that is the only answer here.
