How do you keep yourself entertained?

Left the boots at camp - this was just a stroll down an old gravel road that, well, turned into a nap.

No Ruffies to be found.

And I don't think fooling with tech toys would be conducive to turkey success.
Not true, 2009 spring turkey hunt was my first turkey season, I sat in a pop up blind with my gameboy playing mario. I'd look up every now and then, and call everytime I cleared a world. One of the times I peeked up 2 jakes were pecking at my decoy. SUCCESS. My buddy that has already bought almost 1 of everything at the local hunting shop, became so desperate this year that he went out and bought a gameboy to increase his odds.
And when I make the original post, I spent a few more minutes on CGN, then out came a nice little buck, all because technology was helping me stay still and quiet. I missed, but that's not the point of this story!

I play with the rangefinder a bit, guess a distance then range it. Look through the scope and try to hold it steady at long ranges or different areas where something may appear.
The only non-hunting gadget with me is my video camera. My cell phone is an antique in most peoples eyes, it stays in the truck.

I use my binoculars quite a bit, looking at shadows, birds, etc. They also work great as a magnifying glass when you look through the objective lens at various bugs, etc. :)

Well live and learn.
I don't like carrying a cell or radio during the controlled hunt but have to to party hunt.
I just love being in the bush and count my ability to keep my mind on the hunt as one of the skills that I am learning/practising.
But if you young fellas are enjoying it more, and it brings and keeps more folks to hunting then I can't knock it. It just isn't my way.

Now if the deer start walking around looking up in trees you are gonna hear from me!! :)

You weren't looking at shooting advice on CGN before you missed were you??

Nope
First day of bowseason for me, bit of buck fever kicked in, took a slight "hail mary" shot.

Thats one of the things I think about while sitting, how I will react if game appears. Sorta like visualization in sports.

But, to each his own.

I read a good novel or outdoor magazine , if I get bored with watching all the different animals .
Mostly I'm busy gauging all the bigger bucks that come out....how many points, how far past the ears are the antlers etc., etc . with my 10 power binos, the spotting scope or the 12 power Leupold rifle scope ....depending on what the time constraints are .
I always bring a Thermos of coffee, lots of water and of course a piss-bottle.
Sometimes I cook up breakfast or have a couple of sausage and eggers with hash browns from McDonalds . Around dinner time I'll heat up my lunch on the wood or propane stove.
But not every one has a heated , elevated shooting shack to hunt from, let alone the choice of 5 other ones in different locations .
I usually hunt from can't see to can't see .

i generally ponder what a broad head or 45cal muzzle loader bullet would do to the god damn chipmunk chattering at me. envisioning the little bugger explode or cut in half entertains me for a while. then i really try hard not to actually shoot the annoying little bugger.

i dont normally last more than an hour before i get fidgety and look for something to keep my hands busy.

I am sooooooooooooo glad I live in BC where 95% of of the hunting is out of cell phone coverage!

It's totally lame to be out in the woods trying to enjoy nature and the hunt with full cell coverage.

Just one more reason why Ontario sux :D :nest: :stirthepot2:

a couple of the guys in my Deer group who had their smart phones in their treestands sending messages and playing didnt' end up shooting anything last year.........That's not a coincidence .

Be sure to tell them how they should be hunting, make sure they understand that you know that their phone is responsible for their lack of success, they will understand.
I had my Blackberry in my hand exchanging a quick couple messages with my 6 year old daughter last night when I was in my stand, she was mad at me because I forgot to buy her a night light like her brothers.
20 minutes later I sent a message asking to have my deer cart dropped at the road so I could get my buck out of the bush.
When I got to my stand, a new tree I carved for my climber I pushed a button on my BB that let my wife know exactly where I was in case something went wrong, it is a bit of peace of mind for the whole family.
This weekend I will hunt without a phone for two days, just a normal couple days in the bush where I can separate myself from society, will my success rate increase? I doubt it, but I enjoy the solitude like everyone else. For me it comes down to balance, without my BB on spur of the moment hunts in a work week I would not have that buck hanging in the shop.

Nothing needs to said.....

There is a big difference in using it for timely communcations and screwing around and not paying to attention to what you should be doing.

I know nothing about group hunting, but as in any "group" activity each person owes it to the rest to participate in a way that will benefit the group. If they are doing something that reduces the outcome of the whole, then speak up.
When I hunt with another person in the same woods we use smart phones to text the same things we would be using radios for. Difference being, you answer a text when you can, it doesn't have to be instant.
Hunt safe!
