What caliber is too big for coyote?

I'm looking for a varmit rifle for coyote and wolf. I've asked around and everyone seems to have their own personal favorite that fits in a range. My question is, what size calibre is too big?

I don't yet reload, so I have to go off of factory rounds. I had someone load varmit 110 gr. rounds for my 300, but not sure how much coyote will be left after I hit him.

If your concerned about the pelt, .243 Winchester would be my upper limit.

155mm self propelled is a little big, but you can get whole packs at one time. I occasionally use a 350 GMC as well.

Really depends on what you are doing. Is it pest control, or are you selling the hides? If selling the hides you want as small of hole as possible. If pest control the bigger the better as far as I'm concerned.

If you're hoping to keep and do something with the pelt, you're not going to be happy with a 110 gr. bullet from a 300 magnum. If you're just hunting them, the size of the rifle doesn't really matter all that much.

That is almost any commercial centerfire ammo.

I think what you mean is 105mm Howitzer... unless you're talking about 106mm foreign ammo

Hides are pretty much worthless these days for western coyote except select colors so you're pretty much taking out a deer and calf killer.They also like acreage dogs and cats........Harold

I think any rifle that's in my hand [above .22 LR] when I see one is just about perfect. I like the post about using 8 mauser.

If you are worried about hides, either a fmj from just about any rifle, or something in a small cal. that travels very fast, mushrooms(explodes) and stays inside the body, I've heard that the .204 Ruger is such a caliber. Much bigger cals. all tend to exit and destroy alot of hide.IMHO

For indirect fire applications, a VT fuze set for airburst works best; they're much more accurate than timed fuzes. Point detonation is inefficient and tends to be hard on the countryside.
