Dlask VZ 58 "Shorty" Conversion (updated with range review)

What was the turn-around time?
how long did it take them to change the barrel ? was the barrel specially ordered in and did you get the old barrel back?

It took a couple of months, but DLASK has a busy shop and I wouldn't have minded if it took longer. I'm sure it depends on what they have going on at the time. No, I didn't get the old barrel back.

Is the Lothar Walther barrel chrome lined?
No it's not. Not an issue though, I clean my guns religiously.

Was the gas system re-worked? The hand guards look shorter.
No it's the same length. The FAB hand guard is fatter which makes it look shorter.

Your barrel is stainless?
I'm not sure. The barrel looks to be parked but I could be wrong about that too.

Total price?
I don't want to get into that in an open forum. It was a custom job that I don't think they have set prices on. It's best to e-mail or call DLASK and ask them. I was very happy with the price I paid for the rifle and re-barrel. I found the rifle on this board and then sent it to them. My total price was very comparable to the new ones that are being imported by Wolverine. Plus I got to support a Canadian firearms manufacturer.

Forward grip, I needz one.

I don't think a vert grip is practical, due to the way the mags are inserted. The Magpul AFG is ugly, and the knights one is stupidly expensive. Any other options?

Actually, the left side rail on the Fab defense works OK if you #### your support hand thumb around it, but I'd like something more substantial...

My suggestion is that you learn to shoot by cupping the mag well.
It keeps your core tighter and you become much more stable without having your arm stretched out.
Cupping the mag well also helps with mag reload times as the body only needs one position to remember. Look where your thumb is. Right where it needs to be. Right by the mag release. Look where your hand is. Wrapped around the mag that will need changing.
Unless you have a ton of lasers and junk strapped to the front of your rifle my opinion is that vert grips are a bit whiz bang and superfluous.

Good points, but I like having my hand a little higher up on the bore line. I use a thumb break method with the TP9. I find It offers more control. To each his own I guess.

Range review! The rifle is a blast to shoot. Put 300 rounds through it with no problems. Muzzle blast is not terrible, but it gets your attention.:D See my other post about muzzle brake options.

I was able to get sighted in at 75 yards quite easily, and was able to get reliable hits while standing at 125 and 200 yards. I'll say it again, this rifle is just handy. It's very controllable and compact and would make a perfect bush gun if our laws allowed it.

One thing to note is that the FAB defense hand-guard really vented a lot of heat! After a few rapid fire stings you noticed it! I also officially hate the folding stock. For whatever reason it bashed my cheek every time I used it. I don't have this problem with the "'wood" stock. I'm going to try doing a paracord wrap and see if that helps, otherwise it's gone.

Now to the interesting stuff. I chrony'd my rifle with surplus Czech ammo against my buddies Non-restricted 858. I fired ten rounds through each rifle. I was very happy with the results!

858 Results: 19inch 7.62x39
AVG Velocity: = 2294fps +/- 21fps

DLASK Conversion results:
12inch 7.62x39
Average Velocity: 2119fps+/- 29fps

So we lose roughly 175 fps with a 7 inch reduction in barrel length! IMO this is very acceptable velocity loss for such an increase in portability and compactness. I was also impressed with the consistency of this ammo. Inexpensive surplus it may be, but it's ain't cheap.

damn now that is cool! I wanted to do that a while ago but the armorer said you couldn't remove the barrel from the receiver since it was pressed inside.

Sweet
2119fps does't seem half bad to me. I bet it's still a killer.

If you hate that little stick folder
You should get one of those galil sidefolders for yours, or that Stormwerkz/ACE AK stock. God knows we don't need another M16 stocked red out there. And man is that short and sweet folded up.

... I think I have one Super Short ACE stock left. A couple standards for sure.

Hot little rifles aren't they? I've got a flash pig on mine.. it's a flame thrower.

I'll tell you dlask quoted me around $450 to switched my non-res barrel with another non-res barrel to take care of my headspace issue.
I'll wait and see what NEA is going to do.

try a troy stubby, i have one on mine and it works well and does not get in the way of the mag.

Your gun looks good.

+1 for the Troy modular grip. No issues with mag changes in stubby mode and if you like you can run it even shorter without the bottom cap. The TangoDown QD stubby would be great as well.
