Only one month left before my deer hunting trip starts and I can't wait!!:D I'll be heading to Manitoba for two weeks with an old friend and it's gonna be my first time hunting out west. Only hunted in N.B, Qc and Ont so far and I'm eager to see what the west has to offer after all what I've heard and read. I'm open to any tips or advice from western province hunters here on CGN.

To top it up, I was told by my dealer that the Sako I ordered 5 months ago should be here in time for my hunting trip:dancingbanana:.

I can't wait to install the scope and get her ready. It a Sako laminated stainless in .308Win (Pics are from the internet but I'll post some of the actual rifle once I get it)

Portage has a lot to offer in a lot of hunting areas. I forget where I read it, but a magazine had them ranked top ten in hunting areas in Canada. If anyone tries to get on your case about using a heavy barrel for hunting don't worry about it. I have taken a bunch of whitetails with my Savage 12FVSS in .308.
 
My advice would be to have a scope of about 1.5 to 4.5 magnification. Leave it on its lowest setting while hunting. If a buck jumps up in front of you there is a good chance of getting him with such a scope.
have a nine power setting and the buck that jumps out of the scrub in front of you will be half way to North Dakota before you get lined up on him.

The weight of the rifle with the scope, bases and rings comes to 9.64 Lbs(4.38 Kg). I've hunted with heavier than that before:)

So true, but I'm the one carrying it, not them. Two years ago, I decided to take my Uberti 1876 replica for deer hunting. I felt like doing it the old fashion way but didn't consider the thing is almost 11 lbs and doesn't have a scope, only iron sights. The sad part is that I didn't get to tag any deer that year.
 
nice country... I hunt west of portage near carberry. Depending how far south you will be hunting, could be bluff hunting or bush-wacking. 3x9 is a good choice.... do you know if you will be part of a drive, or are you hunting a more heavily wooded area?
 
I'm about 45 mins south of Portage, lots of good areas to the west and south.

As UpNorth mentioned you could find diverse landscapes... from fields for thick bush.

I love hunting the old style guns too and can attest to how heavy some are, but I still love them! I try to use at least one each year, often for my 2nd tag. Hmmm... Sharps, Highwall or Rolling block this year? :D

We'll be hunting in the Cardinal/Manitou area, I really don't know what type of terrain is out there but my hunting buddy was there before and he's talking about fields and open areas close to woodlines and small wooded areas.
