What ammo does your 64B like?

My friend has a Lakefield 64B that jams fairly often, hes been using Blazer and other "practice ammo".

Anyway Hes wondering what kind of ammo's most of you guys have the best luck with?.

Do they like to eat the hot stuff like stingers/yellow jackets? or something more moderate like wildcats, dynapoints ect.
 
Mine liked the bulk solids. The hollow points would jam and not feed due to the rough surface. Best of the hollow points were Winchester 333s. The higher pressure stingers and "practice" rounds are too much or not enough recoil to properly operate the reloading. these older guns were built to shoot the ammo of the period.

Stick with a regular long rifle...the gun will tell you which one it prefers....mine liked dynapoints best...some like american eagle etc.

All rifles shoot all ammo differently. Your buddy will have to try a box of as many brands as he can to find the ammo that both shoots well and cycles the action. The price of the ammo means nothing. .22's are just like that.
Mine(a Cooey M64. Same thing.) likes Yellow Jackets, but not only hyper-velocity ammo. It'll shoot any HV .22 ammo, not all particularly accurately. It shoots Standard velocity ammo with no fuss too.
None of the hyper-velocity ammo will bother his rifle, but he'll have to try a box of each to find out which one his rifle shoots best. Hyper-velocity ammo was like that right from the start.
"...that jams fairly often..." What kind of jam? Failing to feed is usually the mag. Failing to extract can be a dirty rifle, the extractor or the ammo. Some M64 mags have plastic feed lips. That may be the issue too. My 64's mags are steel.
 
I have never run across any plastic lipped 64 mags. I would be interested in seeing one. I have a first issue Cooey 64 c/w plastic mag but it does have steel lips. The metal mags for the conversion until present are pot metal not steel. The lips do wear away and eventually cause problems, new mags are available from Savage Arms Canada.

As mentioned, the action should be cleaned every 500 shots or so ( gun is very easy to take apart), the powder residue from working the action builds up and can create FTF and FTE, along with failure to reload (jams)
 
If it is only FTE...then you may have to replace the extractor. There are 2 different kinds...depending on manuf. year of the gun...early issues had an extractor that was held in by a screw, the other is pinned into a slot.
 
I adore my '64s!

For me, the best "performance" comes from any "round nosed" bullet..My '64(s) love:
Federal "Champion" 525 Bulk pack ammo
CCI Blaser n' Stingers*
Remington sub-sonic
American Eagle (more Federal??)

I have poor success with remington "Truncated" or, winchester 333's

..the real secret? Tear it down, clean thoroughly( I like brake cleaner) and, run it dry...I only oil/lube for long term storage. If/When I lube the action FTF/FTE city! Repeat every 500-1000 rds...

*Unlike Mr. Toymaker, when I got my first one, 25+years ago, that's al it WOULD work with...
 
You want to try some Win. Dynapoints or Win. T22, they shoot great in my Moss. 144
Sometime it take a while to find the right ammo that your rifle likes....a litte bit like a woman buying a new pair of shoes:bangHead:..

My Sears 8C (a Lakefield 64b sold by Sears) always functions perfectly with any round nosed ammunition I've tried . It tends tends to have some feeding problems with hollow-point rounds due to the bullet shape. I usually use Dynapoints because they are cheapest but I prefer Blazers because they seem to keep rifle cleaner longer. I don't use Remington Thunderbolts because I've heard/read horror stories about the lubricating wax messing up peoples barrels; though I do know people who have used them with no problems.
 
Alright thanks everyone for the pointers!, we took her out with the dynapoints. 333's and some wildcats, no problems with the dynapoints and wildcats, a few fail to ejects with 333's but nothing substantial.

good ammo and cheap. have never had missfire.
make sure gun is clean. again and again have seen there .22 in dirty condition having trouble even with best ammo. if it is clean then maybe a bit worn and need extractor..otherwise: clean and lubricate my friend
