I am a member of the marksmen club, and as far as I know they still do idpa on thursday nights, but they do not have holster courses, which is a prerequisite for participating. I was an idpa member for a full year and was never able to find one. Are there any holster courses coming up within 45 minuts of toronto? The closest I got was orono and they have been full the two times I tried. I am not whining, just hopeful that I can get into this awesome looking sport!

I think black badge is not a requirement but some sort of holster certification is required.

I will shoot onagoth a pm, thanks.

Ack eesa is a lot further then I thought...it looks to be more than 2 hours from toronto, unless I am mistaken.

the NSO (new shooter orientation) course is required by IDPA, if you did not have a blackbadge 7.62mm you would have had to take it to shoot IDPA...

Hmmmm.....the first Action Shooting Match I ever shot was an IDPA Match at Trails End .....I borrowed a gun from a friend, and the only pistols I had shot previously were in the Military....Browning Hi-Power to be exact, 20 years previous....I didn't have a "Holster Course", as I didn't even have a Pistol at the time! We are talking 2008 here........have things significantly progressed since then, that IPDA requires a Holster Course? Anyone can go and shoot an IDPA Match in the US!

It is Canadian Clubs that is driving this.....I am not suggesting this is good or bad, either way.......It is just the way it is presented......IDPA Does NOT require a HOLSTER Certification.....AFAIK!

I am not sure of the history of the course or IDPA, I am only quoting what I have been told, it could be all club driven but I am sure you need to have some form of holster training to participate, some clubs demand IDPA membership also....

The USA is defiantly different in this aspect, it always has bees AFAIK...

It depends on where in Toronto you are, I drive much further to shoot sometimes....I heard that the NSO courses are a little hard to find in the TO area but who knows for sure...If you check on the IDPA Canada website they list all of the instructors and contact info....:)

7.62mm, rules are different in the states. You have a gun just show up at a IDPA match and shoot it.

With that being said rules here AFIAK in Ontario (might be a Canadian thing) they want to you have some sort of compentency test make sure you can safely draw and holster. The IPSC BB, PPC, or CDP, or if you are a current serving LEO/MIL/Security that carries a gun for a living then you are good to go, without a NSO course.

Does one really need to take a BB course to be "holster" Qualified ??

No. One only needs to use common sense to be holster qualified. Unfortunately people can't be taken at their words anymore so there needs to be someone willing to "sign on the dotted line" that they have seen you draw and reholster many times without you shooting yourself or someone else. It is a club thing, so they can feel all warm and fuzzy that someone told you not to put your finger on the trigger when you are reholstering your gun (alla the guy out west at an IDPA match and the cop right here in Toronto at the Police College showing new recruits what NOT to do, with an excellent visual). I don't even think you need a Black Badge to shoot IPSC in the US, I could be wrong though.

Also, don't let that part of it get you down. Practice with your holster at home (gun empty of course), doing mag changes etc.. Go to a match as a member of IDPA, if you are asked if you took the course, say no that you have been waiting over a year to try and get into one. The match runner will either say "O.K., let me check you out to see if you are good to go", or they may say you can shoot the match, just can't use your holster. Don't let this one little thing hold you back, push on through until the solution presents itself. If you were a Cowboy, I could take care of it for you.

No, different disciplines have different criteria, PPC and IDPA for example. Some clubs have their own courses too but are only valid at that club. A BB course is only a requirement for IPSC. Many other disciplines/clubs do however recognize it.

I agree with you. We don't have ' gun culture' in Canada. Target pistol shooting is like a taboo, we are not going out and tell everyone about it.
Thus we need to have some sort of program for beginners. I like the idea of BB, it is well design course, but also I think that those who are serious about IDPA or IPSC should seek a training before BB or any shooting.
More time spend with a trainer is better for novice shooter.

There is NO requirement in IDPA to be holster qualified to compete. Our club, along with many many other clubs in Canada require it for various reasons. Many clubs don't require it in their range rules, but the MD may require it nevertheless.

Many places in the states simply require the participant to have a holster to be holster qualified.

There is no set standard on holster certifications in IDPA.

Having said that, I will be trying to run a New Shooter Orientation in December (pending range time approval). I am also willing to travel to do one, but not if the club I'm traveling too is affiliated.

FYI, I traveled 2 hours to do my holster course way back when....unfortunately, there is quite a gap in IDPA between London and Toronto.

Shot IDPA at the Marksmen last night. Had a blast! Have you contacted Steve David? I know he is not a member at TMC anymore but he did do a NSO just for Orono members that I helped out with. He may be doing an open NSO course in the near future.

Also, I did the Black Badge in August. I enjoy shooting both IPSC and IDPA. If you go to the IPSC Ontario website and sign up for an upcoming BB course you won't regret it. I am a better IDPA shooter because of it. I also have a fancy badge to boot! :p
