I have a line on some CCI mil spec sr primers. My research indicates they are basically magnum small rifle primers. I will be using H322 and maybe H335 in my 223 are mag primers really needed?

I used small rifle magnum primers for 223 just because I had them laying around. If there's a difference, it will only be for a couple of FPS.

Cheap CCI regular SR primer treated me well.
My SPR Ar 15 love them at 200M

I know someone at my range that use SRM primer in his mini14. He got a nice accuracy improvement over non magnum. He also had to reduce his load to avoid flat primers. I think he use Varget or BLC-2.
I tried both powders but never with magnum primers. Never got crazy accuracy with those powder in my 223 so I move on

No real reason to use magnum primers in .223. The CCI-BR4's are the best SR primer around IMO. It is not necessarily, however, detrimental to use magnum primers and usually you can find the CCI 450's for cheaper than you can BR-4's.

I went to EPPS to get some small rifle for my NorcM4 and they told me I needed benchrest primers. I bought them since they were the same price.
Do I need benchrest primers in an ar-15?

Most likely they only mean that you should use a primer with a thick cup help prevent slam fires etc.. The BR-4, 450, R 71/2 all have thick cups and are great primers.

I use magnum primers with ball powders, even in the .223. I will use regular Winchester primers since they are a little hotter. My reasoning is that Winchester should know how to light their own powder.

disclaimer:

During the recent small rifle primer shortage I used anything that would fit in the hole, while hoarding the "good stuff"

I now use only CCI 450 primers in my 223 loads. I did find that ignition became irratic as the temps cooled using BR4.

For short range stuff, you will likely never see a difference but I am tossing 22cal slugs out a very long ways out.

for me, it works the best. I would definitely use the 450's if using H335 or other old gen ball powders. Their deterrents are much more difficult to ignite consistently.

a lot of guys at our range use magnum primers for most if not all their reloading.since i am just getting into reloading i really cannot comment on wether it makes any difference in load performance.

No you don't need BR or match primers.
Nor do you need to worry about cup hardness - as long as you are seating primers below the rim, any and all of them work.

You will likely find that the match type primers 205m, BR4s, 7 1/2s will be more consistant with standard deviations though.

I like BR4s but the most consistant primers within batches and from batch to batch are Federal 205m.
