I finally got a chance to do some grouse hunting with my 8.5" grizzly, it performed well on birds within 15yrds. I actually didn't have a chance to try on anything furthur out, but suspect that it wouldn't perfom to my likings any furthur than 15-18 yrds. I'll have it tapped for chokes during the winter, and probably have a better set of iron sights installed, and maybe a short LOP Hogue to shorten it furthur.

The only thing I really disliked about it was the loudness!!! holy fck does that pig scream, probably won't hunt with it again without some sort of hearing protection.

Haven't you heard? The 8.5 is useless for anything other than posing in the mirror.

:p

Glad to hear someone is out there proving the fudds wrong, at their own game, at that.

They are stupidly loud! I shot my once with out ear muffs on and was deaf for 5 mins. Thats the only thing I dont like about my 8.5

Were you shooting them on the wing or on the ground?

Where does one get an 8.5 Griz these days?

You could try sending me $500, not saying it'll work, but for $500, I might be able to part with mine. I'd have to have $500 in my hand to know for sure though.

ETA, GEEZ, it was just a joke, now it looks like I've sold it. Sorry Infantry, other offer beat you by 20 minutes

Goose25,

You might want to invest in a set of these...

Know anybody around Montreal who install choke tubes?

I got a grizzly and its damn loud, never shoot it without ear plugs now but learned it the hard way when I first got it. Got a slight ring to the left ear all the time now. Cant listen to music loud either. Owell.

I would be really surprised if a shotgun that short would be of any use hunting.

I've hunted grouse and rabbits with shotguns quite a bit and I prefer a 22" barrel.

Even 18.5's are too short in my opinion, as anything past 25 yards and you start running the risk of injuring and not killing. I've seen plenty of grouse/rabbits get away wounded after being pelted with a perfectly placed #6 load from a 12 guage at ranges of 30 yards or so from an 18.5" bbl, that would have been stone dead if shot with a 22" bbl. Assuming you're using regular field loads with shot sizes generally considered appropriate for this game, of course. You can get some extra yardage out of slipping some heavy duck loads into your shotgun, but not much more than 4-5 yards. And it makes for sore shoulder in really light guns as well.

Northman999,

I think it has more to do with patern density than shots speed...

I don't have numbers for 8.5"... but...

12 gauge, 2 3/4 inches, 1 oz birdshots
12" barrel average FPS- 1040
14" barrel average FPS- 1069
18" barrel average FPS- 1114
19.5" barrel average FPS- 1114
20" barrel average FPS- 1108
28" barrel average FPS- 1159

Then using Remington 00 Buck-
12" barrel average FPS- 1121
14" barrel average FPS- 1127
18" barrel average FPS- 1216
19.5" barrel average FPS- 1205
20" barrel average FPS- 1182
28" barrel average FPS- 1250

Personally, I like 26" barrel best for hunting... but that's because I find they 'swing' better.
