Recently got a hold of a 25-06. I read that it is a fairly flat round, so i was thinking of using it for some medium range target shooting if it is fairly accurate (have not shot it yet), as I already have a few .30 caliber rifles for hunting.

Anyone have any experience with this round?

great round for mid range shooting. I have a ruger tang safety that I just got, I am getting 1.5MOA so far at 200. Just tried 2 homeloads, so I have many many rounds to try to get this under an inch. Just load up a bunch of 100's. 117's, and 120's. See what your gun likes, and give er'!!

Flat shooting and target shooting have nothing to do with each other, really. Your target bullet selection will be very limited in .25 calibre, but if it is for practice and not competition, go for it.

Try the new Hornady "SST Interlock #25522, 117 grain". Excellent and accurate.

The 25-06, has been dubbed in some circles as a "rimless magnum", it has also been dubbed in some circles as being over bore capacity. Both may have been true at one time and in some circumstances, may still be.

In any case, the 25-06, really shines best with the heaviest bullets available. I'm not saying it won't shoot lighter bullets well, just far more efficient, with the heavier bullets.

As was mentioned above, 25 caliber "match bullets", are few and far between. I suspect, that isn't what you really meant. I personally prefer the 250 Savage and 257 Roberts, especially with lighter bullets but there is no dust on the 25-06 either.

The SST Interlocks, perform exceptionally well in the 25-06, sub moa groups, at ranges out to 400yards, are not uncommon with them.

"1.5MOA at 200 yards" is about 3 inch groups. Not great but not bad. Gonna take some work to get that below an inch, though.

I've had the pleasure to shoot a couple of .25/06 rifles that were stupid accurate. One was a Sendaro the other a Weatherby Ultralight, both were half minute rifles. The .25/06 is a great round that shoots flat with light recoil. Unlike the old days, today there's plenty of very good .257" bullet options.

I love my 25-06. Its a Thompson encore with the pro hunter barrel. Shot it very little and was able to get it to the 1" at 100 standard. With the handloads I am working on it will do better than that.(I hope)

Pretty flat shooting out to 250 yards or so, then starts dropping off. Very limited recoil, and effective for a wide range of game.(bullet weights from 75 up to 120 grain)

I've posted info along this line previously;), but here goes again:).After hearing about the accuracy my daughter and son in law were getting with their 112 Savages in 22-250, I decided I 'needed' one. However, I thought I'd go for something that had the ability to reach out a little further and I was thinking something along the lines of a 243 Win or a 25-06. As luck would have it I located a 112 BVSS in 25-06 at Bashaw Sports in AB and picked up a Leupold 6.5-20 VX III Long Range scope with Varmint reticle. I started out with reloads using the Sierra 117gr SBT and so far, with the accuracy results, I haven't yet tried anything else:D. Pardon the homemade target.

Never played with the 25-06, but it seems like a fair ballistic hotrod.
Anything with good ballistics and accuracy to match will make a good target rifle.

I imagine to go along with that performance barrel life would be fairly short?

/\ that's the best you could do eh? (teasing, I find your results exceptional for a new gun!).

Without a doubt it's the best I've ever done with a new rifle, right out of the box so to speak. In addition, that was basically with my first set of reloads. On my 'traditional' shopping trip at P&d when in the Edmonton area, in preparation for usual load testing I picked up a selection of bullets of various weights and brands. I never did get that far. With a few other targets showing similar accuracy, I didn't think I'd do any better than that.
