"finished" stock refinish

finally got around to finishing my factory second unfinished boyds stock.

only issue that made it a second was there was a chip on the butt plate screw hole.

old chinese wood stock:

test fit of unfinished walnut stock

after bedding and steaming out some of the vice grip dents i put in. oops

after final sanding:

"finished". gotta replace the sling plate bolts with black ones, and have a leather 1907 sling on its way

i totally agree, i absolutely love the looks of wood.... though i do want a composite stock or sage chassis to build a shorty.. guess i need to buy another m14

How did you get the front ferrule on? Did you pry it off the Chu-wood stock? I have a new finished Boyd stock on the way, and I have all the metal bits ready.

That's excatly what you do.
Bend the recessed tabs flush & with a flat head pry off. Then tap on the new wood stock and pry back down. But before I pryed it down on mine I added a little bit of JB Weld on the inside of the ferrule and let it sit on the fully assembeled stock with the rifle on it over night. Now it never will come off and makes your gas system nice and snug

got it direct from boydsgunstocks.com.. every now and then they'll have factory seconds pop up there and they also have some finished ones they want to get rid of.. they'll ship as long its under the $100 limit. check for sale codes too, i got 50% off mine.
