308 vs 30-06

Hey guys, not trying to start a fight. However I would like o hear some of the reasons if any you prefer either round. I like them both but I prefer the 30-06 and every time I go to the hunt camp I have to hear about how my dad thinks I should have gotten a 308.
I tell him the deer and bears cant' tell the difference.

AMEN. As far as I'm concerned, that line right there closed the debate. I whole-heartedly agree. The only reason multiple calibers were actually invented was so firearm enthusiasts would have something to argue over.
 
the difference is 200 fps and a 180 grain limit with the 308- get heavier than 180 grains and you need to sit the bullet in the powder in a 308 magazine so the nose won't catch - however, properly placed, the point is moot , as there is nothing that a 308/180 won't put down, save very big BROWN bears-and that's 338 territory anyway
 
I have both, but its spitting hairs to say one is better than the other. The 30.06 has a bit more power, but not by much, and has a few more weights of loads to choose from. My preference is 30.06 because I've shot and loaded for the same rifle since i was 14, thats 35 years ago now. Why fix something thats not broke?
 
I own rifles chambered in both cartridges. They are very similar ballistically and in performance on game. I think the .308 is at its best in a short action lightweight rifle loaded with 150gr bullets. The .30-06 has a bit of an advantage with the heavier bullets and I load my Brno ZG 47 with 180gr or 200gr.
 
The 30-06 is 6% faster than the .308 but takes 17% more powder, I read this over 30 years ago, I wonder if its still true with the new powders available in the last few years?? anyboby feel like crunching numbers?
 
I prefer the 30-06...........for long actions, because bullet seating depth isn't an issue. You do also.........all things considered, get more brass life out of a 30-06, only because it's lower pressure. If you want a short action, it's a bit of a no-brainer though. Clear as mud?

This one could go on forever. I think if you want to use bullets 180 grains or heavier, get a .30/06. If you like a lighter, shorter action rifle, get a .308. If the rifle is the same action length for both, I would go for the 06. Both kill stuff just as dead.
 
Most people can use either the .308 and the .30/06 without being aware of much, if any difference. If you want a short, light weight carbine, the .308 has the advantage, as it is if you want a target rifle. I like the heavy 220 and 240 gr bullets, so in my world the .30/06 is the better choice. More importantly, choose the rifle you like better and don't worry so much about which cartridge its chambered for.
 
Can't resist my two cents worth. Any discussion on this subject always brings up the comment about the 308 being more accurate.
Shortly after the 308 came on the commercial market it became very popular with the bench rest shooters. The question was asked why it was more accurate than a 30-06. One of the top bench rest shooters, can't remember if it was Warren Page, or not, answered. Paraphrased here is the answer given. The 308 has no more potential for accuracy than does the 30-06. The 308 has a bit less recoil making it easier to shoot and that is why it is more popular in accuracy shooting.
