I'm trying to locate pre-1990 photos of Canadian soldiers or police armed with .38 S&W (not .38 Special) revolvers - S&W M&P or Victory, Webley Mk. VI or Colt Police Positive. If you have any could you please contact me or post them here.

Many thanks.

Here is the classic photo of Maj Currie in Normandy. Both him and the guy he is speaking with have .38 SW revolvers,, his looks like a S&W and the other looks like an Enfield.

19 Aug. 1944 / St. Lambert-sur-Dives, Normandy, France.

Battle Group Commander Major D.V. Currie at left supervises the round up of German prisoners. Reporting to him is trooper R.J. Lowe of "C" Squadron. Major D.V. Currie is awarded the Victoria Cross for this battle.

While in Normandy in June 2009 for the 65th anniversary celebrations of D-day and the WWII allied invasion of Europe I had the please of standing at the very spot that picture was taken. There is now a memorial there to commemorate the event. It certainly makes one proud to be Canadian when you realize what all those brave fellows did in the war effort.

NAA.

The CF hasn't used revolvers since Korea, at least. Meatheads sometimes carried .38's though.
Police haven't, if ever, used .38 S&W revolvers. Can't say as I'd put any money on it though. Certainly not since before W.W. II. Our cops have never been allowed to brandish their service piece. Finding pictures will be difficult.

?? The RCAF ran .38 S&W Enfield service revolvers into @1965, along with Sten MkII's...

OPP used 38 S&W Webleys into the 60s along with several munipal PDs. PDs also used surplus M&P Smiths in 38 S&W 40-60s.

In 1962 the Ontario Provincial Police was arming their Constables with the Colt Police Positive revolver in 38 Special. However, some of the more Senior Constables still were carrying the Webley 38 S&W revolver.

Brandon City Police (Manitoba) had Colts in .38 S&W. I was offered about 40 of them, back about 1972/73, didn't have the money to make a bid of any kind. Nice guns, though. They were older issue weapons which had been replaced in service with .38 Specials.
.

The standard issue pistol was the S&W Victory revolver for the Canadian 1st Division for most of WW2 until late 1944 when the Browning came on line. Female "meatheads" in the CF carried a S&W Revolver well into the '90's as they were easier for them to shoot. Also as previously mentioned the RCAF still carried the Enfield until the 3 services were combined in the '60's.
