I posted this in a different thread that it really didn't belong, so I'm asking here. A co-worker is an avid migratory bird hunter, and he's noticed this fall compared to last year is pretty slow, on the goose&duck front here in the Cold Lake area. Anybody else experiecing this same drought of bird hunting from thier blinds/sets?

Cheers!

I live in central alberta.. its just more work to find stellar shoots this year.. Alot more water on the ground so the birds are spread out more. Im on par numbers wise as last year with several less shoots in. I hunt with 2 other diehards someone is always scouting and were doing shoots that are usually in the 2-4000 bird range, did one yesterday morning that was probably in the 10000 bird range.. They are there,, just have to make the wheels turn to find them!

No shortage of ducks or Geese in Central Sask., limits are quick and easy, earlier it was mainly Gadwells, but now it's the big Mallards, Shovellers, etc. Snows and Canadas are an easy limit too, if you are in the right field.

There's lots there... but they just aren't moving as much.

It's been to warm and things are just finally starting to cool off. The skies are full this week here in the south. Last week you would have thought they all disappeared.

They flew right over the Ft. McMmurray area for the most part this year!
Hardly saw any during the day.

The weather has really made some changes. These are the issues I'm seeing:

1. Dry Early Spring, followed by cold/wet late spring weather did cause some nest issues. Lots of pairs needed a second clutch of eggs, so they mature late and move later. I saw lots of young that could not fly in late Sept. That's not normal.

2. Poor harvest weather made the crops late, so the hunts are hard to find. The fields were cut later than normal. Birds not grouping up in pea fields, etc.

3. Warm fall weather is not pushing the migration as much as usual.

We've been shooting plenty but the hunts are not what they should be this time of year. Things should pick up soon though.

This year in Central Saskatchewan has been incredible. Like Ben said earlier, at the start the ducks were gadwalls, bluewing teal, pintails, and divers. Last couple of weeks, the ducks are greenwing teal, mallards, and divers. Geese are all over the place. My Duck Tollers have been busy this fall.

Pretty wll the same in my neck of the woods. The geese are changing flight paths almost everyday. The major part of the migration is not here yet.
