Wondering how you guys with 10/22 target stainless models deal with either cleaning or what to do with that garbage paint finish...its just peeling off with the use of gunslick crud cutter
everyone seems to say the reciever is aluminum.. but mine is magnetic... and as far as i know, aluminum isnt
thanks for any thoughts

are you sure it's magnetic?

is your magnet being attracted to the steel bolt or barrel tenon through the aluminum casting?

anyways... it's a newer "crinkle" finish rifle isn't it? there's not much you can do, other than strip the finish and paint it with duracoat or something.

your right jahred the magnet was just going through the casing to the bolt.
and the barrel must be cheap stainless. if it even is stainless.. since the magnet clings to it just as well as mild steel
anyone got any thoughts as to powder coating (not the inside of the reciever of course)

so the stainless 10/22 target is actualy cheap stainless and aluminum?

generally lower grade stainless steel has some magnetic qualities. higher grades have very little or no magnetic qualities.

i wouldn't automaticly dismiss the stainless steel as being "cheap" however... perhaps certain qualities of the lower grades of SS are desireable for a rifle barrel...

all of my stainless barrels have relatively high magnetic attraction, including a factory ruger 10/22 barrel, a green mountain 10/22 barrel, basicly everything in my AMT lightning, and my GP100.

here:

Magnetic permeability is the ability of a material to carry magnetism, indicated by the degree to which it is attracted to a magnet. All stainless steels, with the exception of the austenitic group, are strongly attracted to a magnet.

Austenitic Grades
All austenitic grades have very low magnetic permeabilities and hence show almost no response to a magnet when in the annealed condition; the situation is, however, far less clear when these steels have been cold worked by wire drawing, rolling or even centreless grinding, shot blasting or heavy polishing. After substantial cold working Grade 304 may exhibit quite strong response to a magnet, whereas Grades 310 and 316 will in most instances still be almost totally non-responsive

anyways... the older models of 10/22 recievers seem to have been anodized, where as the new ones seem to be painted. all ruger 10/22 recievers are aluminum (whether blued or stainless version) with the exception of the 10/22 Magnum recievers.

if you could ...

Having seen the finish flake, and knowing what you know about the quality of the stainless steel, would you get the same 10/22, or would you opt for the lower priced blue barrel?

depends what you were going to do with it.. if you want a decent targer semi auto 22lr, right out of the box.. its great for the price..im just going to polish the reciever. If your going to go with a different barrel, different stock and generaly going to customize things spending the extra money up front for a target model could be pointless, though i have heard in the target 10/22 the quality control is a bit better and the average trigger is a bit nicer... but that could be rumor
all in all i still like the gun and cant think of any replacement for the same price out of the box.. not to mention easy to find accessories.. so ya i would do it all again
