I would never hack up an original rifle, but there comes a point when a Bubba'd rifle is beyond restoration, so I think you might as well make the best of it.
Take this for example.
An old fella down the street had it, a Bubba'd Lee Enfield #4mk1.
The stock was cut back, and it was drilled and tapped for a really goofy scope mount. The scope itself is only about 4x from what I can tell.

I've always liked the idea of a forward mounted scope, so got a mount from XS and a Burris EER 2.75x.
Then it was off to the gunsmith for a barrel crop. The one on it wasn't original anyway, it had some strange finish I hadn't seen before. Almost like a snakeskin pattern. Anyway, got the barrel cropped and recrowned to just over the 18" legal limit, a new front sight added. I also smoothed the lines out on the bubba'd forend and got rid of the goofy cheek piece on the stock..
I'm pretty happy with the results:

I took an extra dose of my blood pressure medication and very nearly called you a piece of sub-human garbage before I took a closer look...... It would be funny if it weren't for the fact that somewhere someone is looking at this thread and his L42 and saying to himself "Hmm, not such a bad idea. I own a hacksaw!"
 
Ya got me. Was hoping to get at least one death threat...
Anyway, the bottom one is really mine, just finished it. Nothing original was harmed in the production of this feature. It was already cut down a bit and the wood came as you see it.
 
I made some good money last year sportering some full stocked ones like that.My dad had them in the basement.The crates made a good bon fire.I scrapped the tins and the weird tools that were inside the crate.Got $50 a rifle.

Um, I doubt it was, pulled the pic off an auction site. The new owner paid $4300us IIRC, so I think it's safe.

Tis what I'm hoping. It's pretty handy as it is right now and the 2.75X EER scope lets you keep both eyes open without any issues. Gonna zero it on the weekend. Report to follow.

I also almost got an h-attack....:redface:....with the knowledge that all you worked on was a Bubba, though, the idea of a forward-mount - and the ability to use stripper-clips on it :) - kinda makes some sense....;)
 
The mag.... it's was the mag that blew it. Now had the finished rifle had the L42A1 mag in it...... Well we'd be in the truck head'n your way already....:D
 
I was actually going to leave the mag out and say I was converting it to a 5 rounder.
I didn't want to be liable for somebody going into convulsions though.
