What do I need to attend a IPSC entrance course other than a handgun?

I would use at least 4 mag pouches for a 1911 set up as you will be using 8 round mags. Speaking of mags..........do not buy 10 rounders as it will put you into Open Division where you really do not want to be with a stock 1911

All you need is a holster and 1 mag pouch to take the course. You can probably take it with just 2 magazines.
Remember, the course is about learning safety first, not deciding which division you're going to be competing in. If all you have is gear that will push you into Open Division because it doesn't meet divisional requirements, don't worry about it. Don't go and spend a pile of cash to replace gear you already have.

Factor in $$'s for ammo and travel time and gas and match fee for each match you attend. Then the yearly BB membership fee. Then maybe the itch to upgrade your existing equipment.
You can use any gear that you have. However, the 7 round mags will be a disadvantage one you really get into IPSC. If you have them, use them for the course now, or even ask the instructor if you can borrow a couple of mags. I think everybody has a few spare 1911 mags kicking around you can borrow for the course.
Don't worry about buying a new belt just yet. For the course, a good, stiff leather belt will be sufficient. Again, I'd even see if I could borrow a mag pouch and a holster for the course. Once you get into competition, then you can start seeing what gear you want/need to buy.

Cost is $240 which includes your first year IPSC Alberta membership, your first match fee, books, lunch both days and 2 days of instruction. To take the course you will need a firearm 9 x 19 or larger, 4 mags (5 preferred), a holster, mag holders, belts, safety glasses, ear protection and 500 rounds of ammunition. You will be on the range for 2 days about 8 hours or more a day. There is a 100 question open book exam that I get you to do before the course as the exam takes about 3 hours. If you are interested I ask for a $100 deposit to hold a spot for you.
I have lent both gear and guns for BB courses. I would say the results have been 50/50 for those that have stayed and those who i have never seen again.

My instuctor had to lend me a gun because my ATT did not come in time for the course.
I made him aware of the problem before I signed up for the course. I had everything else.
