Beretta Storm 9mm vs .40 cal

I have wanted to add a 9mm carbine to my collection for some time, and have been awaiting the importation of the Thureon Defense AR15 style rifle from Arms East since April.

After 7 months, I suspect it's not going to happen, so have been considering the Beretta Storm. I had the opportunity to shoot a 40 cal model this past weekend, and, while the Storm was terrific to hold and point, it was pretty awful to shoot in .40 cal.

I shoot a .357 lever gun, and a .223 AR, both of which are a pleasure. The Storm is not something I'm now willing to consider, in .40 cal.

Can anyone comment, based on their direct experience, on the differences shooting a 9mm versus a .40 cal Storm?
 
Ive shot the 9mm and didn't think it was bad at all....Really, although I've never shot the .40, I wouldn't of thought it was that bad.

Big advantage of the storm is the 10 round pistol mags which are compatible...

Yupper.... my friend is taking his Storm to be re-barreled and it's sitting in the $500 neighbourhood... He went with the 9mm for consistency in caliber - as he already has a few pistols in 9mm... ammo is readily available...

BTW it's a slick little carbine, which will be more fun to shoot once it's non-restricted:D
 
I have a CXStorm in 9mm with a 18.5inch barrel.
It cam with a muzle break turned on the end of it, that part I am not thrilled with.
I like the 10 shot magazine and it so far has had no issues with f2f or f2e.
It eats anything I feed it too.
Some 115 cast home loads9 (light targets) and Blaser and Selleir Bellott as well.
It was a momentary lack of sell controll when I bought it from Epps in Ontario, but the rational behind this was the fact I do not have my RPAL and having my buddy buy it for me and have the barrel replaced and de-classified would have taken several months.
Your smith might be able to install the barrel and check head space and such in a quicker amount of time, but the fine folks at the Fire Arms Center work on a different time frame than most of us.
I called them myself and they said it would or could take several months to look at it and then send out paper work.
As for 9mm over 40 S&W its your choice, what are you set up for, what is availability of loaded ammo or components to roll your own.
Either will kill zombies or punch paper as good as the other one.
I have not spent much time with it, so I am getting a group of about 3 inches from 10-25 paces each and every time I go to the gravel pit.
Your mileage may vary of course.

really 500.00 thats a good deal if it includes the barrel and install and check over along with paper work too.

Yes, up to $500 for the new barrel.

I’m just not willing to put up with the hassle imposed for restricted firearms, if I don’t have to. For me, the limitations imposed on ownership of a short long-gun are intolerable. Swap out the barrel and be done with it, is my opinion.

A long-gun in a hard-case is hardly practical or convenient.
 
I have the Storm in .40
Mainly because I also have an Elite II and can use/swipe the mag in it.
Also shoot the 9mm version...virtually the same. Can't remember if there was any difference in the recoil.

mine is also pretty accurate at 50 yards, so is the 9mm.

I have enjoyed my storm in 9mm. Very accurate and fun to shoot. I looked into getting it made nonrestricted but it was 500 bucks (including the barrel and labour at elwood epps) and I don't really shoot anywhere but the range.
 
I have a Non-restricted Storm in 9mm. It's a good little carbine for the price. .
Ergonomics are decent. Although not perfect.

9mm is cheaper to shoot than 40 cal. Very little recoil and lots of fun. Having the ability to take this carbine anywhere is a nice option. For the bull barrel you're looking at $550 including all the re-registration work done for you. Is it worth it? I think so.

Also with the 9mm, make sure you get the model that uses the Beretta 92F mags and not the PX4. Almost all of them being ordered these days are for the 92F magazine, but some of the PX4 ones might have slipped in. One other thing, I've heard rumours that a 96 mag for 40 cal can hold 13-14 9mm rounds and will work. I haven't tried it yet. But if this is try it's a nice extra.
 
i got one in 40 and its awsome accurate with my handloads and will soon be non restricted it will make an awsom camp gun to cuddle up with if a bear decides he is coming into my tent 10 quick shots of 40 with 3 or 4 more mags ready problem solved lol

The gun is accurate out to 100 yards. I don't have any problem hitting the Down Zero on the IDPA target at that distance. I probably have over 500 rounds through it now, very cheap to shoot with my cast reloads. The 16" barrel gives me an additional 200 fps using my 124 gr bullets so making 150 PF is no problem using my pistol loadings for IDPA.

Gun is easy to field strip, clean and reassemble. Gun uses pistol mags so the 10 rd limit is nice.

Unless you use a .40cal pistol then the 9MM becomes atttractive due to cost of ammo. I reload so the cost difference is marginal at best.

The carbine is a fun gun to bang away at the range with, should be competitive in Multi-Gun and very inexpensive to shoot.

I just came back from an afternoon at the gravel pit.
Shot 200 rounds of hand load 125grn cast bullets.
Load was 3. something of accurate#2.
I was annoyed at the first 20 rounds that where stove piping.
Quick filed strip and I had it figured out.
What was actually happening was the spent shell wanted to be ejected from the left (blocked)side of the rifle and not the right side.
I had assembled it wrong the last time I cleaned it.
I do not know the name of the piece off the top of my head right now,but will find out later on.
I could hit any rock in the pit at 100 yrds with ease. Fun was the name of the day today and eventually I will get on to some tighter groups , instead of being happy with pie plate accuracy until now.
Of course, I left my camera at home today and thus was not able to take pictures of the action or the cause of the stove pipes I mentioned.

Just shot a 9 mm for the first time today, was very impressed, 50m 100m 150m 200m gongs all got nailed regularily with little recoil I would definately consider one in 9mm. I know where there is a good used one for sale pm if interested
 
I've tried the storm in .40 and it seemed fine to me. Nothing awful about it. Almost zero recoil and a nice boom to it. Very accurate. I'd say other than ammo compatibility with your other guns (.40 or 9mm) flip a coin.
 
is it possible to get a storm thats non restricted from the factory? it is my understanding that once a firearm is restricted no modifications to it can make it unrestricted.

perhaps i am mistaken
 
For my Beretta 92FS, I went out and bought a 96 mag, because I had also heard about compatibility. Other than the lips being slightly more open (fixed with a pair of pliers), they work fine. I was able to fit 13 rounds of 9mm into the 96 mag, and it was completely flush with my pistol, same as a 92 mag. If the 92 mags work in a Storm, I can't see why the same wouldn't apply.

Let's hope so. The whole reason I bought the PX4 was to get a CX4 to use with it. And that is the way I ordered my CX4.
