I am going to purchase a Leupold VX2 4x12 50mm. What is your opinion on this and could you please comment on the best price. Thanks

Hi Woody. I'm not familiar with Leupold except for their excellent reputation. Since part of the benefit of owning a Leupold is their lifetime warranty, you might wish to ask your Canadian dealer just how they go about handling Canadian warranty claims. Just "You sending the scope to the manufacturer" would be the wrong answer. Shipping scopes across the boarder is,, an involved process. A dealer who'll take care of this for you is worth an extra buck or two IMHO.

The dealer doesn't handle the warranty. You send it to Korth in Okotoks, Alberta, they'll take care of it. No need for cross border worries.

I set up a VX-II 4x12x40 on my son-in-law's Tikka T3 300 WSM. Good scope.

FWIW, unless you can think of some very special reason to justify the 50 mm objective, and the extra cost thereof, you might seriously reconsider sticking with the 40 mm version. Except possibly under the most extreme circumstances involving a minimum of available daylight, I doubt most could actually notice and difference in brightness. On the other hand, the 40 mm certainly is a lot less...ummm...bulky and unobtrusive sitting on top of a hunting rifle.

Actually that has changed. I am attaching the release from Leupold on scope exporting from the states.

I knew this would be coming, but I have a question. I have only bought a couple Leupold scopes brand new. If I buy a rifle and it comes with a leupold on it, is the warranty now void, or does this apply to purchases from today forward?

I have some that are 30 years old, but don't know the origins.

Yeah this is going to be interesting. It is nice to have a warranty center here locally however it is also wrong to have someone have a monopoly on the market. I have sent scopes to Korth for reticle changes and they have been great but and I say but as authorized dealers I am not prepared to spend the money they ask for authentic product. Besides if I buy a scope direct from Leupold in Oregon and go through the paper work to import it legally what is their stance then? It is still authentic.

I would be curious to know what Leupolds stance is on this. Wait and see I guess.

I'm not quite following here. Are you going to check serial numbers to see if the scopes were imported by you ? Will you require a proof of purchase?
Let's say I bought a scope from someone off this website and that person had originally bought it in the US 15 years ago. The warranty is void ?
That would be a major faux pas on Leupold's part and will hurt their sales immensely in Canada.

I thought their warranty claim to fame was that they warrant the product, not the purchaser. Nice.

Wow. I just ordered a precision rifle from a dealer, and was waffling between a Leupold or Nightforce. I'm quite glad that I opted to go with the Nightforce.

Just sent the following email to Korth. Might as well get the information straight from the horse's mouth.

I recently read the following news release regarding Leupold scopes:

Does this mean that people who have purchased used scopes will not have warranty service? Will this turn into a nasty surprise for guys who purchased a used scope in good faith from a private seller? I am all for protecting the guys that go to the trouble to become authorized dealers, but I would be disappointed to find out that one of my scopes that I bought used was brought in to the country through some source other than an authorized dealer and find my warranty voided. For the record, I don't think that any of my Leupolds came in through the grey market, but I don't doubt that there are guys out there in that situation. Are we, as purchasers of used scopes, rolling the dice with a product that may not be supported by warranty? Or is this a move to push prospective purchasers into buying new rather than used?

I look forward to the clarification.

I have a whole bunch of used Leupolds. Now what?

This will affect the new scope sales. Guess they don't need the business. :puke:

I'd pass on the 50mm obj end. They are heavier and require higher rings making them harder to use and don't offer much if anything over the 40mm. The EE is full of used 50mm scopes, probably for the same reasons.

Just wait until the competitions catch wind of this one. It makes for a great ad campaign, "Leupold's Warranty A Scam"

Pretty disappointing if this is truly the case. I have a lot of Leupolds, many of which came from the US when export was legal .

Leopold warrantee announcement

I take strong exception to this policy. I am informed by Korth that it only applies to scopes purchased, I believe, after Nov. 1, 2010. Therefore any used scope purchased at a gun show, from a gun paper, etc. is not affected. YET
They have come out with a lot of new products in recent years and have made scopes only introduced in the last 2-3 years "obsolete" in the sense that they are not offered any more. I have an early VX L that is not longer sold even tho I only bought it a couple of years ago.
The problem will arise as these scopes show up at gun shows, thru newspaper ads, or even as part of a used gun.....it might well be that the scope was lawfully bought in the US and imported......but Korth will not honor the warrantee. How the hell will we know where the scope was originally purchased.
For decades, Leopold was known for quality, durability, and a lifetime warrantee..........that is no longer going to be the case and I think they have made a huge mistake to solve what can only be a relatively minor problem.
How do you spell ZEISS?

I received the following response this morning:

This policy was put in force to ensure that effective immediately (actual date of November 1st, 2010) all Leupold products being offered for sale in Canada are of a legally imported/exported nature. This is to protect the end user and also the dealer from illegal copies and optics which have not followed the proper import/export procedures. Note: This does not include optics purchased before Nov 1st, 2010.

If you or any individual purchase a USED Optic from outside of Canada you MUST according to US State Department and Canadian Import Law(s) apply for Export Approval documentation through the US Commerce/State Department. Once this is approved this documentation must accompany the Optic when Crossing the Border (whether by mail or vehicle).

Our company in conjunction with Leupold USA is governed by US and Canadian Law and are responsible for obtaining permits from the US Commerce/State Department on ALL OPTICS imported into Canada. If an individual has not submitted an application and been approved then the imported Optic would be deemed illegal.

All Leupold products have Serial numbers and can be traced by both date of manufacture and origin. Therefore this statement is effective November 1st /2010 and only for Leupold optics whose serial number when tracked proves to be from a source other than from Leupold US to Korth Group Ltd. in Canada and will have its warranty voided.

All authorized dealers located on our website at www.korthgroup.com under the Dealer Locator can be used to determine if you are purchasing from an authorized Leupold Dealer in Canada and thus allowing peace of mind that all optics will be covered in Canada for warranty service.

Hopefully this will allow you a better understanding of the new policy and put you at ease regarding the product(s) you own.

Thanks. I'm particularly concerned with scopes purchased used in Canada How is one to know if it was legally imported prior to purchase?

And I got this email when I got home from work:

Just to re-affirm this only pertains to scopes manufactured from Nov 1st 2010 – so anything pre-this date is not an issue. The only option at this moment to check Serial #’s on Optics you wish to purchase is to call Leupold USA and they can advise you quite efficiently the details associated to the scope. With regards to purchasing new vs used the only thing is to buy from a reputable person/dealer and similar to purchasing a vehicle if you do the homework first by confirming the Serial # and then the Import/Export if its in question.

Hope this answers all of your questions, feel free to contact us for more information.

To which I responded:

That's easy enough. Do you have a contact name or email where we could send requests for serial number verification?

Thanks

I would suggest that anyone selling a used Leupold in the EE provide a photo of the serial number and verifies it's legality through Leupold USA and provide proof of same in their ad. Hopefuully Korth can provide an address where we can verify serial numbers.

We're way off topic here but it's a good discussion to be having.

But back to the OP, I would avoid the 50mm objective. Makes for a scope bigger than it needs to be.

So, its not just legally imported to keep the warranty, its legally imported through Korth? My son is currently in the miltary in Denver. He always buys leupold scopes for his rifles. Now, however, when he returns home, even after legally importing his rifles with scopes, he will have no warranty on the new ones? Hmmm...
Doesn't seem fair or right. :(
Oh well, for less than 500 bucks, he can get a Zeiss.

My last Leupold was bought at Bass Pro just north of Calgary on my last trip out to AB. Out of curiosity, I notice that they are not listed on the Korth site as 'authorized dealer'. Does this mean that, if I bought another there after the the first of Novomber, I'm out of luck? Or did I miss something?
