Picked up a kicks ind. extra full choke tube and not sure if I should shoot steel with it. The box says its ok but a few guys figure I'll destroy the barrel with steel shot. Not sure what to do as I paid 50 bux for this at bass pro. It looks bad a$$ on the gun as it is extended ported model. I dunno, just looking for some info on this.
thanks

Ya, thats what I figured. The box says OK, but a few guys at the local shop say otherwise. Well I guess I'll try it out when I get back into real world, as I'm stuck on a job in the bush. Thanks

A few manufacturers mark their chokes for pattern not constriction, for example I've seen a tube marked Modified for lead and Full for steel.

Yes I know. I was just wanting to know what the actual designation was on the op's tube and what type of barrel it was to be used in? Kicks have tubes designated by restriction as well as descriptive like Howler H Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote.

887 nitro mag, I hav the mod in there rite now and was worried about shooting with steel with the kicks xtra full. Some people telling me not to shoot unless I wanna split my barrel. The box says it's good and I've been researching as much as I can on the net to see what others think as well. I think I'll give it try when I get home. Thanks again for the info

How bout you go to their website get their 1 800 number and call them they are the experts and would save you a hell of a lot of guessing from internet beings.

Here is is 1-800-587-2779

Straight from their website:

X-Full

Pass shooting for open water or open field from 30 to 60 yards.
BB and smaller shot size recommended.

So Don't use it for decoying birds as you will have too much pellets on target, go to a farmers field or wherever you can and set out at 25-35+ yards and pattern the choke. It says made for pass shooting so id say you would get the best pattern at 45+ yards with your chosen load.

Well I shot it today and all is good. Noticed it is a bit louder than the stock choke but thats ok, this kick's looks pretty bad a$$. Gonna try and get some on paper to see what the pattern is like. well thanks again

Interesting.... all the local gunsmiths recommend no steel out of full chokes. Maybe it's a CYA thing?

I believe your Kick's choke is louder due to the porting which vents gas back.

I think that the smiths are being cautious because most full chokes were made with lead in mind and most firearms manufactures do not recomend steel through chokes marked IM or F. As far as they are concerned, their mod is the steel full. There are after market that manufacture chokes with tighter designations for steel and Remington markets a choke designated full for steel and lead.

Now that you mentioned it, I recall a goose hunt a couple year ago I did use steel BB shot out of a Remington with a full choke. It was marked "Full - steel or lead". After a few rounds patterning and shooting at geese, there was no problems with the gun.

full choke on old guns+steel =trouble. the new chokes designed different are ok as long as they are marked so lead or steel. if you try old 870 or cooey you are asking for a problem yet some guys still do it....
