put out my moultrie infrared cam last week after finding a scrape during my first scouting trip this year. cleaned it up a bit and sprayed some scent in the existing scrape. figured id see some does and maybe a buck or two as there really wasnt much sign. but, it has good deer habitat written all over it...on the edge of hardwood/super thick swampy stuff, 2 acorn trees 20 yards away, corn field about 150 yards away.

unfortunately its on public land so i had to tuck my cam down into some thick stuff to keep it hidden from others which resulted in black and white pics due to all the shadows. next time out i am going to try video mode as the bucks made 3 more scrapes in front of my cam.

i think its 3, 8 pointers and 2, 10 pointers? checkout the last one. not big, but a cool rack. im targeting the typical 10, but i'll use my first tag on any deer that steps out :D

That palmated one seems to look more "rutted up" compared to the rest. Look at the size of his neck, wont be long now boys. I think is going to be an amazing season this year for Ontario, already heard of one contender for #1 typical shot outside of Napanee. Giant 10 pointer

Nice pics too bad none are out during shooting light eh.

the does and one buck showed up during the evening between 6-7pm where there is still enough light and one buck would have caught an arrow in the morning at 7:18am. i know where they are bedding and feeding so it shouldnt be too difficult figuring out where to sit.

apparently they love the buck scent i sprayed in the scrape. when the rut gets here ill be using the same scent with some aggressive rattling and grunting. with at least 4-5 bucks visiting the same scrape im thinking it wont be too hard to get at least one to show up during the day. :)

Looks like you are on to them. Good work. I've always thought deer hunting was easier once I learned to think like a deer.

i definitely have a different method when it comes to deer hunting and i really think outside the box. i have a knack for picking good spots and i get to see a lot of deer. but, thats the game you gotta play when it comes to public land where deer dont act like deer.

this spot is only 30 yards from a well used atv trail and most people would never consider hunting here. my second choice spot is only 75 yards from where i park and 20 yards from a highway so if i shoot one there my deer may get whacked by a car:eek: once again, 99% of hunters would simply walk past this spot to the main bush where they think there are more deer.

tracking them in the snow is waaaay more fun than stand hunting so im not in any rush. i'll start rushing if i dont have anything in the freezer by dec 15th...2 weeks before it closes. ;)

I must have the itch. Each frame was a "shoot no-shoot" decision and then I looked at placement.

Heading out next weekend. Keep the weather cold and the does hot.

When you said you used buck spray what did you use?? Did you know the MNR here in Ontario has banned the use of real deer scents. You can only use synthetic now. Just be warned the CO's are going to be checking for this, this year. And I was told this by the CO that hunts with me as he knows I use scents and didn't want me to get charged.

The ban was put in place to try and stop the spread of CWD. They are not sure how the disease is being spread and they think it could be through the scents as they come from deer farms.

Edit: I just check the regulations and it says pending for this, so I'm not sure yet if it is actually passed. So just have it be a FYI.

Seriously. Has anyone had any success with synthetics at all? This year is a whole new adventure for me and I don't want to attract one of the MNR mechanical bucks with synthetic doe pee. :D

code blue ;)

i was out yesterday from 3pm til dark and didnt see a thing. just a few bleats here and there to get a feel for the area. apparently its going to take some more aggressive calling to get them in. i'll be rattling and grunting a bit next weekend to see if any will show.

well, it looks like a few of the bucks may have just been passing through the area as i didnt get any pics of them last week. but, i have discovered a deer highway about 50 yards from the cam with many fresh scrapes and rubs so they could still be in the area.

at least the funky lookin critter is still around :D finally got some color pics as well. the cam is now set on 30 second video clips so i cant wait to check them out next week sometime.
