this carry handle was included with an AR I bought last winter and was told it was off of a colt. The only markings on sight are what you see. Can anyone confirm if this is or not a colt carry handle? thanks
The “splintered A” on the side of your carry handle means this carry handle was forged by Anchor Harvey Aluminum. They produced forgings for Colt, FN and Olympic Arms, to name a few I know of.
If the "A" was followed by a letter such as F, (AF) it would have been made for FNMI. If followed by a "C", (AC) it was made for Colt.
I recall seeing Wilson Combat and Stag Arms using Anchor Harvey marked forging for their upper receivers. It is possible your carry handle come from one of these manufacturers.
I'm not sure what the "2" stands for, as in "A2", but I suspect this forging could be Anchor Harvey's nomenclature for the style/type of receiver it's made for. An A2 receiver. I've also seen the "splintered A" followed by a "-9", as in A-9. So many variations, so little time.
I've noted a "splintered A" preceding another "A" (AA) and a "splintered A" followed by a "2" (A2) on a few Bushmasters. Though your carry handle may have come from a Colt, I have reason to believe it came off a factory Bushmaster.
Here's what my R6701CH Colt Competition H-Bar carry handle looks like as originally shipped from the Colt factory in 1991:
