Sitting around and playing with ideas. Has anyone seen or done non permanent sporterizing to a K31? They're unique, accurate and well built. It would be fun to turn one into a sporter or long range shooter.

Thinking would use the St marie graphics side mount no smith mount and go from there.

Thoughts? Advice? Pics?

Where to start?

They are pretty good as is with the full military stock, original barrel and bedding system.
Limit is that it is not a heavy barrel and they need some upward pressure from the stock for long range barrel damping.

If you want to go to the expense of a HB target version conversion, here's one choice: http://www.lprgunsmith.com/K31_rifles.htm

Some Swiss made K31 based target rifles:

You can get a very decent shooter just by adding a clamp-on brake or threaded brake or threaded barrel damper, bi-pod adapter and clamp-on scope mount.

One person has threaded the muzzle on a k31 in a sporterized stock and has suffered a loss of accuracy with either the screw on brake or barrel damper. When these items were being developed and tested by Swiss Products/St.Marie, it was always on full stocked K31s which showed some accuracy improvements with these attachments.
We believe the problem is due to the barrel not having upwards pressure from the stock. With the threaded attachments off, accuracy on that sporterised rifle return to normal.

Robertson Composites had someone inquire about getting one of their stocks for a K31 action and barrel last year or the year before for a magazine article I believe.
Unfortunately, they backed out and Ian couldn't go on with the project without a firm order.

And here is an add in the 1951 edition Stoeger's "the Shooting Bible No.42 of the K31 action Hämmerli 300m High Performance Match Rifle in 300 H&H Mag or 30-06.

Hey old friend.........

Curious did you do the bedding on your K31? I am thinking about doing it........But is there a real reason to or is it justifiable?
I sanded down the upper portion of the stock but left the lower portion untouched to allow cradling of the barrel ( side to side ) and a bit of upwards pressure, but it will allow it to harmonically flex and twist upwards as there is no wood touching it form above. Accuracy jumped doing that mod.....Time for bedding?

Thanks

IMHO, not if everything else is as should be. The only bedding adjustment the Swiss armorers did were to add shims between the front of the action and the stock to adjust how much upwards tension there was against the front of the barrel. Mostly due to wood compression from the torque of the action screw and wood drying out. This area acts like the fulcum of a beam with the ends being the muzzle area and the rear tang.

I think diopter has nailed it... why mess with something that's already good. If someone would just buy my mauser in the EE I could buy mounts from him;););):D:)

Interesting - I saw other pics of the hammerli on the net and figured it was a once off custom job. Very very nice looking. Not within my budget though:p

Hmmm - accuracy jumped how so? wider groups? groups in a different place?

These heavy barreled K31 action target rifles were commercially made with non-military actions. They were single shots actions with solid bottom receivers, no cut out for a magazine, much stiffer than regular K31.

The lighter version in a sporter stock did have the magazine cut-out.

And from Grunig & Elmiger

Their(G&E) current rifle lineup:

POI changed and the groups tightened up a tad bit..........

I wont be bedding then, The upper guard wood relief was a easy quick and effective mod.

Thanks Dioper for the info!
