30-30 advice please

not that i promote it, but i know (not hunt with) guys who will drive deer out of the bush by being vocal and with their dogs to people who are waiting for the deer to run past and shoot at them. It's wrong and i don't aprove, but some people still do it.

If this is the type of hunting that you will be doing, then, no a single shot is not sufficient and will require a lever action, pump action, or an auto loader.

If you are like me and respect the game, then a single shot is all you need. I am no expert on hunting
cheers and good luck

They were of the opinion that I should get something that would kill the deer more rapidly to avoid having to track it and have a chance at loosing it.

The other thing is how to present this: me being the noob and them being way more experienced and doing me a favor...

As for my shoot I am extremely confident to be able to put it in the vital zone at that range (50-75 yards) and I also have a 3-9x scope wich should help also.

If you are using a scope with the 30-30 then please, please, please burn 5-10 shots at 100 yards at a range or somewhere else that you can target shoot safely. I'd feel happier with open sights on the 30-30 at that range, as its what I am used to. I have seen too many people miss deer with whatever calibre and whatever action rifle when using scopes because they either didn't sight it in each year before going hunting. Or did so and threw it carelessly in a gun boot on a 4 wheeler and knocked the alignment out enough to miss a sitter. I sight in my .280 each year faithfully as it has a scope. 1 shot each year, because I never see any deer during hunt season. ;) Its always on the money, but it is peace of mind for about $5-10 if you are sighting in the 30-30.

If these guys lost a bunch of deer shot at woods ranges with the .30/30, it's simple, they can't shoot. And all these guys saying if you use a .30/30, practice, practice, practice. That's the case no matter what you use, a gutshot deer is a gutshot deer. Doesn't matter much what it's shot with. With the lower recoil and muzzle blast of a .30/30 a new shooter will become a good shot faster than someone learning with a .30/06 or a magnum. My 2 cents.

I agree. If you shoot 30% more and you can hit anything at 200 yards from any shooting position, then you should have 95% of all hunting in the bag when others won't with bigger cartridges.

You just go ahead and hunt with that thurty thruty and ignore all the advise. Now as for wounding game with the 30 true you can. It is important to carefully place your shot and be a competent shot. Good tracking and stalking skills are also important so you can position yourself for a 1 shot one kill situation. This is a skill that was well known to our Great grandfathers and our Grandfathers and to modern day successful bow hunters. So read up all you can, head out in the woods and quietly walk the game trails, and keep your eyes open.

Usually, if they are not spooked before the shot and you make your shot count then one shot is all you will require. (Even a 338 magnum with a poorly placed shot could end up with a lost animal, so make that shot count)

I don't use a 30-30 myself, but I know they work well in the bush at shorter ranges. In an open field they work well on deer size game out to about 300yds.

Cheers and good luck

ROTFLMAO

So anyone who drives deer is bad? With or without dogs? You obviously know next to nothing about deer drives.

You failed so hard in this post its ridiculous.

my advice go to the range a day or two before and make a couple shots and build up some confidence, i use my 30-30 every year and it works for me, you just have to know the limits of your gun (jus like any other caliber). . .

Your opinion is duly noted, however it's been done this way for hundreds, if not thousands of years....it's not wrong, it's traditional. My opinion.....

I think Colt Nut needs to rethink posting on a forum with Real Hunters. As my 10year old son would say, EPIC FAIL! as for the 30-30 single shot. What better combo to take your first deer with. Ps. I don't hunt with dogs but I sure the hell don't mind when the neighbours dog run a deer over to me!!!

30-30

The 30-30 is a great deer round, especially here in Ontario. My Marlin 336 in 30-30 is my "go to" deer rifle. Combine that with some Remington Core-Lokt 170gr ammo and it will shoot 1.5" at 50 yards and around 2" at 100 yards with factory open sights on a bench.

I never had any luck with the Leverevolution ammo, thank god my Marlin likes the Core-Loks cause they are half the price! Enjoy your 30-30!

Leverevoultion is only about $25. Not that big of a price. You'd be hard pressed to find Corelockts for $12.50.

I have to agree with you on this.
In our wonderful country with very diverse provincial game laws, it's a poor topic of: "my hunting ethics are better than your ethics" discussion to get into.
IMHO, as long as one stays within the local laws, I say more power to the next guy.

as was said, you failed on this post. First, pushing deer using dogs is illegal in most provinces that I know of, but there is nothing wrong with a deer drive.
Second, seriously, 300yds?? with a 4' drop? even if you use handloads with 165gn SP there is a 3' drop. Are you good with that holdover? It will take a deer at that range if you can sight in for it. most are sighted for 100yds. that's a dream shot if you are not prepared for it.
