Worst Deer Calibers

There is no such thing as a bad cartridge, only a bad gun owner. Hold it I got that wrong. Was that about kids or dogs? Or parents? Or liberal politicians?

I have only ever had 1 bad cartridge.....but I had accidentally got case lube on the primer....the rest of the batch were okay.

I've shot deer with the following from the list... :)

- 7mm Rem Mag
- Any .22 centrefire (22-250)
- .44 Mag ( in rifle ) & 45 Colt
- .375 Win
- .280 Rem
- .300 RUM
- .243 Win
- .300 Savage = I use a wildcat called 308Bellm gives identical ballistics 150gr = 2600fps
- .303 Brit (my dad used the same rifle for moose)

I'm thinking the author/editor/mag really didn't have a clue what they were talking about...

Whoever made that list is on crack.

7mm Rem Mag.....7 northern Ontario bucks. 7 shots.

If they didn't drop on the spot, max adrenaline travel was twenty yards at the most. The only negative thing I can say about the round is it really seals up a wound under 100 yards and you need another fifteen minutes to track if they entered thick reeds/brush.

Here's what I think about this list....

- 7mm Rem Mag Maybe a candidate for this list, due to meat damage.
- Any .22 centrefire Not my first choice either, due to shot placement being so critical
- .44 Mag ( in rifle ) Perfectly fine deer caliber under 100 yards!
- .375 Win/ .444 Marlin Great hard hitting deer calibers within range limitations!
- .280 Rem Great deer caliber capable of being effective in many conditions!
- .300 RUM Definitely overkill; I can totally see this being on this list.
- .243 Win You've got to be kidding me. Great deer caliber.
- .300 Savage You've got to be kidding me. Great deer caliber.
- .30-06 Ackley Improved Great all around caliber, including deer hunting.
- .32 Win special Wasn't this designed specifically for deer? Fine deer round.
- .8mm Mauser Another fine deer round that can be reloaded fast/flat or heavy/slow.
- .303 Brit Factory 150's have a damn picture of a deer on the box! Wake up!

I think this list was written to get readers to write letters to the editor to get the magazine all fired up and people talking about them. kind of a shock value article.

my two cents

i personaly have never been a fan of people trying 22-250 on deer myself it all depends on knowing the limitations of the gun. the a 22 lr has killed an eleplant but thats not the norm . . . i heard it has anyways

I've shot around 20 - 25 Sitka blacktail deer with a 22-250 with 55gr Sierra Varminter Spitzer bullets 3660fps max shot distance I ever took was 100 yards always shot them in the neck and every time they were DRT with a 1/4" hole in and a 2" hole out and the only thing holding the head to the body was the hide the rest of what little was left was like mixed up jelly.

Now we have Partitions/Scirroco's/Trophy Bonded Bear Claws/TSX and maybe a few more premium bullets a 22-250 will dump any deer on the spot if shot placement is good and anything can wound a deer if shot placement is poor...

EXACTLY. There are many a wounded, and not recovered deer every season that are just that because of bad shot placement.I bet it is safe to say 98% of those weren't shot with a .22 centerfire.
