Double Rifles: .375 and Better

Anyone and everyone is welcome to shoot it if they wish. I am in Whitecourt.[/QUOTE]

Whitecout!!! CRAP Man, I spent years working out of there.... Oh well, better for my pocket book if I don't get to try one...Ardent!! Tell me how nice it is when you get to shoulder that Sabattii please...

Does any one over in the Okanagan play with doubles? Let me know if you do please..I'll bring the beer;)

If you are real lucky you could get a double with your double.

Results of one Right and one Left.

OF course a double with a double means double the work. No way am I double dragging on double deer. So I would recommend hunting close to home in case you need to run back and get a quad and a good dog to help.

Nice rifle, mind if I enquire what size circle it will put 4 rounds in at 100 yards?

When I had a scope on it would do 4"-5" 4 shot groups. That is in a sitting position with my hand under the forearm resting on a bag and no support in the back of the rifle. One time I put the rifle right in the bags front and rear to see what it would do and got a 1" 5 shot group out of the right bbl the left was 3" and the bbls crossed badly.

I have since removed my scope and changed powder, it might do better now. All I know is shooting off hand it is in the kill zone nearly every time at 100 yards if I can hold it steady. The left bbl will do funny things when the bbls are warm though.

A DOUBLE RIFLE shoot in the west this spring? Yes please, count me in and I would offer our full support. Let’s think a bit, we need a FULL size Ellie target, a charging Buff target, and let’s make it a FUN match!! Anyone want shoot my 8 Bore? I am sure between us we could have a great display. It’s turned real cold here today, so thoughts of Africa, a double rifle on my shoulder and the sun warming my back are a real tonic.

Who’s for a Spring Western Canadian Double Rifle Meet?

I'm in, for sure. :)

Pitchedlink, I think if we get into shouldering these things, and worse, shooting, we're in trouble... :D

Nothing wrong with that, means game in the freezer out to 100 reliably ...nicely done on the deer double!

loving this thread guys.

Keep the pictures coming :)

One of the dog handlers over here is from South Africa and his friend runs safaris. It is on my 'to do' list.

I picked up a 375hh bolt and I have a funny feeling that it will be the start of a big bore addiction. These doubles are beautiful.

Is it just me or is that very unsafe gun handling in the video?

How so? I didn't see anyone doing anything particulary unsafe or dangerous. One of the trackers had his gun over his shoulder and muzzeled a few guys but who's to say it was loaded or the safety wasn't on. A couple put their hands over the muzzle when resting the gun, but they're big boys and can take that chance if they want. None of them had their fingers in the trigger at anytime other than shooting though. After the PH reloads I can hear what sounds like the safety being put on after he closes the bolt.

It's Africa, people there are more relaxed and comfortable around guns. While it might seem dangerous to Canadian's with all our anal safety nazi's pointing out any slight infraction of dictated rules, to those in Africa they're being safe. Being anal isn't necessarily being safe anyway. MOST important is to keep your finger off the trigger until ready to kill. You will get muzzled with a loaded gun at some point and will likely do the same to someone else inadvertently, as long as your finger is outside the trigger it's extremely unlikely something will happen.

I'm not suggesting other precautions shouldn't be taken or people should walk around muzzling one another, but let's not get out panties all bunched up on the occassion it does happen especially so when we're out in the bush using our tools and having a good time. No need for Nazi's out there.

Dudes almost get run over by an elephant, and we are most concerned about muzzle control? And this thread was doing so well!

Africa's a whole different place with regards to firearms. One of the first things I was struck by was what a challenge muzzle control was in dangeorus game hunting conditions. I posted this in "seeking advice on Africa" threads, as that was one of the more challenging aspects. Those guys in the video use a gun like you use a pen, wrench, or laptop for work. All day every day, they're more casual about guns, and manage to stay safe. Not what I'd call ideal gun handling, but in the same vein I recognize who am I to critisize. I hunt with the same rifle the fellow who shoots the charging Ele does, mine's a .375 H&H.

Now I gotta question... we've talked and looked and side by sides but what about over under doubles? I've found pics before but does anyone actually own one and use it with succes?

I'm not a fan. The opening angle is extremely broad, and the lines far less attractive. In their favour, the over unders may suffer less regulation issues due to the principle variable being elevation. I'm afraid I'll likely never own an O/U anything though, mind you, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. I'm a side by side man, for rifles and shotguns.

Like everything the O/U has plusses and minuses. You gain a narrower profile and some rifles allow you to regulate the barrels by means of an adjusting screw, the downside is that the action must be opened to the full travel to facilitate loading a fresh round.
